A British woman who rushed to her husband’s aid while he scuffled with a home invader said on Thursday that she would not be intimidated.

The couple took on a burglar after a confrontation in the kitchen of their Waterfall holiday home – a fight which played out through most of the house.

Speaking to News24, 69-year-old Patricia Leask said her family refused to be intimidated by criminals.

'We will not let them ruin our lives'

"We emigrated 18 years ago, but we come home for the holidays to visit our grandchildren. We know all about South Africa so we know the crime situation, we will not let them ruin our lives," she said.

Leask recounted how she was awoken in the early hours of Wednesday morning to the sound of her husband fighting with a burglar.

"My husband Ronald had woken up just after 4am and gone to the toilet and then decided he wanted something to drink. He went to the kitchen and because it was dark, when he saw a figure he thought it was me," she said.

"When the figure darted, he realised it wasn’t me and he grabbed hold of the guy and tried to force him out of the door where he thought that the guy had gotten in."

Leask said that unbeknownst to her husband, the man, and three others, had gained entry to the house through a bedroom window, and he was struggling to get back past her husband to escape.

"My husband is 76 years old and he is not a big man, but he held his own. He fought the guy the whole way down the passage and then fell into the bedroom which woke me up."

She said that she had sprung into action, and jumped on the man who was fighting with her husband.

“I just jumped onto him and tried to throttle him as hard as I could. I got in a few good scratches on his face and my nails are worse for wear for it today. When he [the intruder] realised he wasn’t going to win, he pulled himself away and rushed out the window," Leask added.
