We consulted Facebook Community Teachers for Change to find out what they think makes a good teacher.

Open your diary and look at today’s date. You’ll get a fright when you realise half of the first term is already over.

You may have started the new year with a bunch of resolutions: At long last start that exercise programme, floss teeth daily – and be a good teacher.

We consulted Facebook Community Teachers for Change to find out what they think makes a good teacher.

Margaret van Jaarsveld-Ihlenfeldt believes a good teacher teaches children about boundaries and treats each child in a unique way, but remains consistent.

“A good teacher gives learners an opportunity to start over every day – despite what may have happened the day before,” says Margaret. “A good teacher loves the children in his/her class.”

Nearly all the teachers agree with Salomé van der Mescht. She sums up the key characteristic of a good teacher as, “Patience, patience and again patience.”

Other characteristics of a good teacher are:

  • Perseverance
  • Fairness
  • Consistent discipline
  • Empathy and sympathy
  • Hardworking
  • Adaptable
  • Good sense of humour
  • Dedication
  • The ability to inspire your learners
  • Creativity

Lorette van Jaarsveld believes that apart from a passion for teaching, the golden rule for any teacher is, “Always be prepared.”
