When a missing Bloemfontein student turned up dead recently, many parents wondered what the outcome would’ve been had the child been found in time. Here’s advice for parents, should they ever find themselves in the awful situation of their child going missing.

When a missing Bloemfontein student turned up dead recently, many parents wondered what the outcome would’ve been had the child been found in time. Recent news reports of two Pretoria teenagers who’ve also disappeared without a trace now have parents anxiously pondering the question, “What if my child goes missing?”

While no parent wants to contemplate the prospect, it’s important to know what steps to follow should your child disappear.

The organisations Missing Children and Pink Ladies have the following advice for parents:

  • Don’t wait 24 hours, go to a police station immediately. It’s a common misconception that you have to wait a certain number of days or hours before you can report a person missing.
  • Complete a SAPS-55(a) form at your nearest police station. Also take along a recent photo of your child as well as any other photos or information that can help police identify them. Make sure you get the name and contact number of the police officer handling your case.
  • Contact Missing Children on 072-647-7464 or Pink Ladies on 072-214-7439 and notify them that your child is missing.
  • Email the following information to Missing Children at info@missingchildren.co.za or fax it to 0860-580-3310. You can also email it to Pink Ladies at missing@pinkladies.org.za or admin@pinkladies.org.za. They will circulate pamphlets and information regarding your child’s disappearance:

  1. Your child’s name.
  2. Your child’s age.
  3. The circumstances under which your child disappeared.
  4. The details of your SAPS-55(a) form, such as the name of the police officer who provided you with a case number.
  5. A recent photo of your child.
