What to watch this weekend

It’s not exactly light viewing, but there’s a movie on tonight you shouldn’t miss – Cry, The Beloved Country, based on Alan Paton’s book. For the rest of the weekend there’s a little bit of everything: a tweenie vampire flick, comedies with funnymen from opposite ends of the spectrum – Rowan Atkinson and Martin Lawrence – and an original-recipe action movie.

Friday 7 March Cry, The Beloved Country SABC3 8.30 pm Based on the novel by Alan Paton, this is one of those movies every South African should watch. James Earl Jones stars as a priest in apartheid South Africa who is summoned from his village to Johannesburg to find his son in jail in connection with a robbery in which a white man was killed. He meets the man’s father, played by veteran actor Richard Harris, and the encounter changes their lives.  Saturday 8 March My Babysitter’s A Vampire SABC2 4 pm This one’s for the tweens. Nerdy Ethan isn’t trusted by his parents to look after his little sister Jane, so they hire a babysitter. But Ethan suspects the new babysitter is a bloodsucking vampire, so he sets out to prove it. The movie was such a hit it spawned a TV series too. Johnny English SABC3 7.30 pm The inimitable Rowan Atkinson plays the lead in this spoof spy thriller. After an attack on MI5, Johnny English is Britain’s only available agent to go after a conniving Frenchman who’s stolen the crown jewels.  Sunday Big Momma's House 2 e.tv 8 pm Funnyman Martin Lawrence is back in his fat suit playing his most outrageous character – Big Momma. This time the undercover FBI agent takes a job as a nanny for a woman who is under investigation for murder. GI Joe Retaliation

M-Net 8.05 pm

If it’s a bit of action you’re after, this is it. There’s no shortage of tough guys in this movie – Bruce Willis, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Channing Tatum. And they’re not only fighting the bad guys – they also have to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardise their very existence.
