It’s a mixed bag of small-screen delights this weekend – from the film version of Sarafina and a wonderful animated movie made in 1977 to an unlikely love story from Woody Allen and Johnny Depp as the Lone Ranger’s sidekick. There’s definitely something for everyone.

Friday 14 March

 Sarafina!

SABC3 9.30 pm

Now this is a blast from the past. This 1992 movie of Mbongeni Ngema’s hit play stars some serious female talent – Leleti Khumalo, Miriam Makeba and Whoopi Goldberg. The Hollywood actress plays a teacher in apartheid-era South Africa who inspires her students to stand up for their rights. Definitely worth watching.

Saturday 15 March

The Rescuers

SABC3 1.24 pm

They sure don’t make animations like they used to. Don’t believe us? Then check out this hit from 1977 about two mice from the Rescue Aid Society who rescue a little girl who’s been kidnapped by a gang of treasure hunters. It’s a delight and kids under 10 will love it.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

DStv Sony (channel 127) 8 pm

We can all do with something silly now and then and you don’t get sillier than Austin Powers. The self-proclaimed master spy goes back in time to the swinging ’60s to recover his stolen mojo and stop Dr Evil from taking over the world. Good fun.

 Sunday 16 March

Lost In Translation

SABC1 8 pm

Bill Murray’s brilliant at comedy, but he’s even better at drama. In this Woody Allen movie he plays a depressed American actor who’s in Tokyo to appear in a commercial. He meets a beautiful young woman, played by Scarlett Johansson, and they form an unlikely bond.

The Lone Ranger

M-Net 8.05 pm

We’ve all heard of him, but how did the Lone Ranger actually come to be? If you believe this version of his sidekick Tonto’s story, it was purely by accident. If you need another reason to watch it, we have only two words – Johnny Depp.
