As it’s such a long weekend we’ve put together a bumper batch of TV highlights this week – from an entertaining documentary for the kids to animation classics, the Chinese Grand Prix, action flicks, the season 4 premiere of Game of Thrones and a new chat show with Guiliana Rancic.  Phew!

Friday 18 April

Arctic Tale

e.tv 10.30 am

This beautifully filmed documentary follows a mother polar bear and her cubs, as well as a walrus and her calf, as they deal with the harsh realities of life in the icy Arctic. Kids will enjoy this documentary with a difference narrated by Queen Latifah.

The Jungle Book

MNet Stars (channel 111) 2.15 pm

It may have been made in 1967 but this classic animated movie based on Rudyard’s Kipling’s popular book just doesn’t get old. Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera and Shere Khan will enthral the kids!

Game of Thrones

M-Net 9.30 pm

Season 4 of this epic fantasy about seven noble families fighting for the throne in the mythical kingdom of Westeros kicks off tonight with not one but two episodes! Fans will be in heaven.

Saturday 19 April

Monsters University

M-Net 6 am

Yes, it’s early for a movie, but you know what little kids are like on the weekend. So here’s a good film that’ll keep them glued to the TV so you can go back to bed and lie in a bit. It’s all about Mike and Sulley before they became super-scarers.

Alice In Wonderland

SABC2 4 pm

If you’re in the mood for something quirky, Tim Burton’s take on Lewis Caroll’s epic tale is all kinds of creepy, thanks largely to Johnny Depp’s over-the-top Mad Hatter with fiery orange hair. Mia Wasikowska is precious in the title role, though.

Gran Torino

MNet Showcase (channel 108) 9.45 pm

Clint Eastwood not only directed this movie, he also plays the lead character, a grumpy but tough-minded war veteran who doesn’t get on with anyone – including his own children. When his teenage neighbour tries to steal his car, the old man finds friendship where he least expects it. Worth a watch.

Sunday 20 April

F1: Chinese Grand Prix

DStv SuperSport 6 (channel 206) 8.45 am

Don’t miss the high-octane F1 2014 action from the Shangai International Circuit.

The Last Stand

M-Net 8.05 pm

When it comes to action flicks, sometimes you just need one with good old Arnie Schwarzenegger doing his thing, carrying around a big gun and blowing stuff up. This time he’s doing it as the sheriff when an escaped criminal stops over in his small town.

Beyond Candid with Guiliana

DStv E! Entertainment (channel 124)  9 pm

In the first episode of this new chat show Demi Lovato opens up to Guiliana Rancic about her eating disorder, being in therapy and her daily battle to stay sober and healthy.

Monday 21 April

Winter’s Bone

M-Net Action (channel 110) 12 pm

There was so much hype around Jennifer Lawrence in the Hunger Games movies and Silver Linings Playbook. Here’s a chance to see her in a very different role – as a young girl who hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact.

Shirley Valentine

M-Net Stars (channel 111) 5.45 pm

A bit of light relief before the working week starts! Shirley is tired of her life and wondering when and how she landed up in such a rut. Then she accompanies a friend on a trip to Greece and starts seeing things in a new light.
