Fans of legendary pop diva Whitney Houston have been overjoyed to hear a movie about the late singer’s life is being made – but her family aren’t at all impressed by the final product.

'They’re just looking for another opportunity to be in the spotlight'

The film, I Will Always Love You, which opened this weekend, tells the story of Whitney’s successful music career but also of her stormy marriage to Bobby Brown and her struggle with drugs. Whitney’s body was found in 2012 in the Beverly Hilton hotel in California. She’d drowned in a bath.

In an official statement posted on Whitney’s website her sister-in-law, writing on behalf of her family, says viewers must be aware the film was made without the family’s approval and that Whitney’s mother had in fact requested it not be made.

“I don’t think they realise that our memory of someone has been brutally assaulted,” Pat Houston writes. “They’re just looking for another job or an opportunity to be in the spotlight.”

She adds the producers had little real insight into Whitney’s life and attacks producer Angela Basset, who’d been an old friend of Whitney’s, saying she hasn’t behaved like a true friend.

“It’s a disrespectful, dishonest slap in the face for Whitney’s true, loyal friends.” But despite the family’s misgivings it appears Whitney’s fans are satisfied with the look at the iconic singer’s life:
