Is all the trash in your garage driving you up the wall? Why don’t you don your DIY coat and covert the trash into something amazing.

More and more creative are opting to create their own unique products rather than buy from retailers.

The trend is known as the “maker movement” and is popular among techies, artists and crafters. It is so popular in fact that thousands of people flock to Mini Maker Faire’s around the world to see what other ingenious “makers” have created.

The exhibition’s, which is really a giant “show-and-tell”, started in San Francisco in 2006. This weekend it will be arriving in Cape Town for the second time. The exhibition, which will be hosted at the Cape Town Science Centre in Observatory from 26 to 28 August, promises to be even better than last year’s amazing event.

More than 60 makers are going to be presenting their creations. Amongst them are robots, homemade drones, artworks, electrical vehicles and things which have been made using 3D printers. There’s even a workshop to show you how to make things for your home using quick dry cement.

“The drones are always a highlight,” says Alayne Reesberg, programme director of the exhibition. Mini Maker Faire fans will be able to fly the drones themselves. “It’s actually all about your skills and craftsmanship. It’s a geek’s paradise.”
