Woman finds wedding ring at the bottom of the ocean, does the unthinkable

This is pretty incredible.

If any one lesson can be learnt from Augustin Aliaga and his wife, Juani Sanchez’s, life story it’s that things that disappear are not always gone.

Almost four decades ago and just five months after his fairy-tale wedding to Juani, Augustin (60) lost his wedding ring while on a diving trip with his spouse on the Mediterranean.

The Spanish couple, who married on 17 February 1979, were convinced that the ring was gone for good – but fate had other plans.

When Jessica Cuesta, a diving instructor from Benidorm in Spain, saw a ring on the seabed during a diving session in August, she was determined to find the owner.

“I found a wedding ring diving off the island of Benidorm,” Jessica wrote on Facebook. “I wish I could give it back to the owner. It has been lost for a long, long time because it was covered in sediment.”

After Jessica had the ring cleaned she could make out the name Juani as well as the couple’s wedding date, 17-02-1972, which was engraved on the ring. She didn’t make the details of Juani’s name known online so as to rule out chancers trying to claim the ring as their own.

Jessica’s plea worked, her post was shared more than 80,000 times and eventually caught the attention of Augustin’s cousin.

Dumbfounded, Augustin contacted Jessica. “So that she could see it was totally true, we sent a photocopy of our family register and a picture of the wedding ring,” Augustin explained. He adds, “when my wife told Jessica her name, Jessica began shouting with excitement.”

Augustin says he was very excited to find his wedding ring again after so many years. “It was a pleasant surprise, because more than the material, it is very symbolic and emotional, as it’s the ring that we were married with,” he said.

The couple will meet Jessica later this month so that she can hand the ring over to them in person.
