When she went into early labour, Manita Singh was expecting one baby. Instead, she got five - within half an hour.

Twenty-five-year-old Manita didn’t go for a scan during her pregnancy and was under the impression she was expecting just one baby.

She was admitted over the weekend to a hospital in Ambikapur in eastern India after she’d started having severe labour pains.

Her quintuplets were born at 26 weeks. Each weigh less than 1,3 kg and are being kept for observation in the hospital’s high care unit.

The fact that Manita had been carrying five babies came as an equally big shock to her husband, Manesh (26).

He’s extremely happy about the birth of his five daughters. Two years ago Manita had a baby boy who died soon after birth. “We were heartbroken when we lost our first child, a son, immediately after birth two years ago,” Manesh says.

“I believe God has compensated the loss.”

The mother and five daughters are in a stable condition but doctors are watching the babies closely, fearing they might not survive because they were born so prematurely.

“I only hope that they all survive and I can give them a wonderful life,” Manesh said.
