Kate Winslet thinks worrying about other people’s opinions is a complete waste of time.

The 39-year-old actress is one of the most celebrated stars in Hollywood, having picked up an Academy Award, an Emmy and a BAFTA among other prestigious honours.

'Young women should focus on enjoying life and being who they'

But no one will find Kate freaking out about how she occurs to other people anytime soon.

“I do think that young women are pressurised by a lot of what they see in the media, it’s just the way it seems to be. You only have one life. I don't want to spend my life wasting it worrying about how I look or what other people think,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “How other people perceive me to be or what other people have to say about me, that’s just a waste of time. Young women should focus on enjoying life and being who they are because you’re great, all of you.”

Kate portrays villain Jeanine Matthews in Insurgent, the sequel to 2014 sci-fi picture Divergent.

The movies are based off the tomes written by Veronica Roth and these novels are a huge hit with Kate’s daughter Mia, 14, and son Joe, 11.

So when the opportunity arose to take on the part of Jeanine, Kate didn’t hesitate.

“My kids wanted me to do it and love the books and, you know, I’m a cool mom,” she smiled.

The star is grateful for the role, as she is able to demonstrate her broad range of acting abilities.

"People have been saying, 'Gosh, you're not known for doing these big franchise pieces and playing the baddie,' and it's like, 'Isn't that great!'” Kate gushed.

Insurgent, which also stars Shailene Woodley, Mekhi Phifer, Miles Teller, Theo James and Ansel Elgort, is released to US theatres March 20.
