A Chinese restaurant owner is in hot water following an incident in which one of his diners tested positive for opium which he’d unknowingly eaten in one of the restaurant’s meals.

Liu Juyou tested positive for the drug during a routine check for drunk driving, and ended up behind bars. His suspicions that he’d ingested the drug in a bowl of noodles from a restaurant in Shaanxi province were confirmed when he persuaded family members to also eat there then have themselves tested.

Meanwhile, the owner has confessed to buying 2kg of poppy seeds for R1 118, grinding them up and adding them to the noodles.

Police said the processed poppy seeds apparently contained enough opiates to make one test positive for them.
