It worked for British superstars such as Leona Lewis and One Direction, and now it could open doors for local singers; X-factor is coming to South Africa.

SABC 1 has obtained the rights to the singing competition  and the first season's knockout rounds will be held on 7 June in Durban, 11 June in Bloemfontein, 14 June in Cape Town and on 21-22 June in Johannesburg. There will also be knockouts on 25 June in Nelspruit and on 28 June in Pietermaritzburg.

Promising singers can apparently also apply online.

The winner will win R30 000 in cash and a recording contract with Sony Music Africa.
