The network is also investigating the possibility of offering premium content – for example, a version of Twitter where you don’t see any advertising, Reuters reports.

Twitter junkies take note: you might soon have to pay to tweet.

According to Elite Daily, the social network is “playing around” with the idea of a payment model, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey announced at a shareholders’ meeting on Monday.

The model would offer additional functions but Dorsey emphasised that it’s still just a possibility that Twitter might consider in future.

The network is also investigating the possibility of offering premium content – for example, a version of Twitter where you don’t see any advertising, reports Reuters.

Twitter hasn’t been as profitable as it once was and it’s thought the network is looking at other ways to generate revenue.

“We do believe that there’s a real importance that Twitter is accessible to everyone in the world no matter what their economic stature is and where they are in life, so the general case has been to make Twitter free and open.

“We’re always talking with our customers around what could be and what they’d like to see, and this is an idea that has come up,” Dorsey explained.

“We don’t have any particular plans to announce today but we’re always looking at those patterns, that feedback and understanding if it’s the right thing to do for the greater Twitter audience.”
