Mayor in hot water over election selfie

2014-05-06 12:43

Johannesburg - A district mayor is reportedly facing punishment after posting a selfie while voting, just days after the IEC appealed to voters not to take pictures in the ballot booth.

This emerged during an interview with national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega on SABC's Morning Live on Tuesday morning.

Host Leanne Manas later tweeted that police are taking the "election selfie" issue seriously.

The Electoral Commission over the weekend appealed to voters to respect the privacy and secrecy of their vote by not taking pictures of themselves voting, saying it could undermine the secrecy of the vote.

The IEC reminded voters that it is an offence to reveal a person's vote on a ballot paper, and offenders face a fine or a jail term of less than one year.

The IEC called for responsible selfies (photographs taken of oneself with a cellphone), saying voters could take photographs of their inked thumbs, or of themselves outside the voting station.

Phiyega also said during the interview that the police had done their homework on election hotspots and any other election crimes, and she was certain South Africa would have a peaceful election.

"We as the police are there to ensure that they are secured, they are safe, and they peacefully exercise their constitutionally given right to vote."

She added that police will enforce the law, and arrest those who transgress it if necessary.
