Etc... History has proven again and again that the pen will always win over the sword ? so here is the motto for my blog. "If the pen be greater than the sword - then let my ink drown out the cries of One settler One bullet. And if the pen truly is greater than the sword then let more white South Africans rise up and demand the equality we were once promised."
Backwater Views This is the online abode of a just-finished-studying, freelance (read: unemployed) journalist on his way to the East to help pay off his student loan and hoping a cool few grand in his pocket will help him achieve this dream. The blog is about everything ? from a backwater point of view. It?s an hybrid form of social commentary about social commentary, not in the way art can be a reflection of society, but more in the way that drunken driving is a reflection of the pressures society has burdened us with and the baseness of humankind.

2oceansvibe 2oceansvibe.com is a local Cape Town based lifestyle website run by Seth Rotherham. Seth is in his late 20's and lives on the Cape Town Atlantic Seaboard. In his quest to live by the 2oceansvibe slogan, 'Work is a sideline, live the holiday', Seth makes the most of the city of Cape Town - enjoying the best there is on offer, from sea and sand to restaurants and nightclubs, insisting on only the best service wherever he goes. With a particular weakness for the finer things in life (including his 'angels'), Seth spends his days (and nights) playing nicely with Cape Town's fun loving locals and visitors. Using a special brand of humour (and unable to avoid his own idiosyncrasies) - his thoughts, reports and writeups often result in brutal, hilarious commentary. This is further fuelled by Seth's unique network of friends and contacts which, due to their great diversity, allow him more accurate and further insight into topical conversation.

Fridays are a day that I traditionally can't work because I get a bit excited about the impending weekend; as opposed to the other days of the week when I cannot work because I'm an idle fool. Anyway, in preparation for the weekend ahead I am wont to reflect on the past week in the river of life that has just flowed by. My life is pretty uneventful though, so I invented a cast of imaginary friends and a life in which incidents of interest do occur and wrote them down in a Friday Ramble. Then I began emailing it to random people but became frustrated with mailing lists and so forth so I put it on the web. Occasionally I put some other stuff up too. Enjoy. Or not. | "An Unexpected Friendship" and other tales The South African blog novel, "An Unexpected Friendship", tells the tale of an unusual friendship that develops between an elderly white woman, Granny Smythe, and Nomsa Khumalo, a young black girl. Granny Smythe has been forced into a retirement village by her son. He expects her to stay in a box and not cause any trouble. Granny Smythe, however, forges ahead with her new life as a widow and jumps right out the box - much to the consternation of her son. Being a product of the old apartheid South Africa, she has never had the opportunity to mix with blacks socially but thanks to her new life, she befriends little Nomsa who eventually becomes more family than just a friend. The two primary aspects of contemporary South African life that the novel explores are ageism and racism in their many forms. These two threads are intertwined in a plot that displays a view of many different slices in South African society in a way which hopefully both entertains and warms the heart simultaneously. |
Really Random Ramblings A collection of random prose, poetry and other assorted writings. I also hope to make this a portal for helping the helpless and feeding the poor - no strings or sermons attached.
QueerMind Obsessive ramblings of a QueerMind I grew up feeling different. It was years before I realised it had more to do with me ogling the bottoms of sexy men than with the fact that, with fair skin and blue eyes, I didn't really look much like my parents with their tan skin and brown eyes. Growing up in South Africa in the 70s meant that, again, it was years before I had a name for what I was. I had no Uncles who had never married "but kind hearted enough to share his house with young men straight out of school", or a husky voiced Aunt with a keen interest in Golf, a passion for plaid shirts and hiking boots, and a disturbing fondness for DIY. No, my family was relatively normal until I came along. If you haven't already figured it out, I'm queer, but you might not realise that the title also hints at my odd mind. More my odd mind I suspect, but don't tell anyone.
