"An Unexpected Friendship" and other tales The South African blog novel, "An Unexpected Friendship", tells the tale of an unusual friendship that develops between an elderly white woman, Granny Smythe, and Nomsa Khumalo, a young black girl. Granny Smythe has been forced into a retirement village by her son. He expects her to stay in a box and not cause any trouble. Granny Smythe, however, forges ahead with her new life as a widow and jumps right out the box - much to the consternation of her son. Being a product of the old apartheid South Africa, she has never had the opportunity to mix with blacks socially but thanks to her new life, she befriends little Nomsa who eventually becomes more family than just a friend. The two primary aspects of contemporary South African life that the novel explores are ageism and racism in their many forms. These two threads are intertwined in a plot that displays a view of many different slices in South African society in a way which hopefully both entertains and warms the heart simultaneously.

It was years before I realised it had more to do with me ogling the bottoms of sexy men than with the fact that, with fair skin and blue eyes, I didn't really look much like my parents with their tan skin and brown eyes.
