Working with languages, as a freelance translator, has proved how very similar people are, all over the world. We all want to be well, happy and loved, and not taken for granted and abused, particularly by governments we are supposed to trust.
Born in Zimbabwe, chose to live in South Africa, passionate about fairness and humanity in all things. Injustice, crime and abuse of all kinds infuriate and sadden me.
Sometimes I simply have to say what begs to be said.

With so much debate around the decision to disable the comments on News24, it occurred to me that there are many people who are more concerned with the loss of their ‘look at me and see how clever I am’ platform than with the loss of a healthy debating forum.

So our esteemed Deputy President ‘did not know ‘ who owned the charter plane he used to make his recent urgent business trip to Japan. Right.

When horrifying violence and murderous acts are perpetrated as a direct result of the leadership vacuum in this country, blame is laid anywhere.

The deterioration of our democracy was never more glaringly obvious than during the State of the Nation Address this week.

Isn’t it odd that, when a prominent member of the ruling party becomes the victim of an armed robbery, suddenly it is a dire emergency?

Our brilliant new Energy Minister has announced the signing of an obscenely expensive nuclear power deal with Russia.

It can never be said that living in Africa is boring. At the risk of causing offence to countless people, Africa is very colourful.

Pallo Jordan seems to have disappeared from pretty much everywhere, and although he has been proved a liar, some kudos must go to him for having had the courage to actually step down.

Accusations of fascism could very easily be countered with accusations of nepotism maybe, corruption possibly, or, perish the thought, outright theft – of taxpayers money.

In the middle of another week in sunny South Africa, a slightly cynical French expression comes to mind – ‘plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose’.

So with all the protestations by Numsa with regard to the latest strike, it turns out that, once again, that was only hot air.
