WATCH: ANC cheers Parks Tau ahead of vote

22 August, 01:11 PM

More than thirty people cheered on current Mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau, before the city's new council voted.

Monday, 22 August began with councillors from various political parties including the ANC, DA and EFF being voted in. There are 270 councillor positions.

Detractors, who are critical of the EFF's decision to back DA mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba, protested outside the venue.

Ahead of voting, facilitated by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), ANC councillors supported Tau in song and dance.

The party earned 44.5% of votes in the country's business capital in the 2016 municipal elections.

On Sunday members of the EFF accused ANC mayoral committee member Dan Mbovu of attempting to bribe them to vote in favour of the ANC.

The following day demonstrators wearing shirts reading #EFFSOLDOUT protested outside the council chamber.
