Andre P Brink receives Hertzog prize for prose

Stellenbosch - Andre P Brink, well-known Afrikaans author was among 12 prize winners at Thursday night's South African Academy for Arts and Science annual award evening.

Brink received the Hertzog prize for literature for his novel Donkermaan.

Dr Stewart van Wyk of the University of the Western Cape was honoured with the Elizabeth Eybers scholarship for his study project over comparative descriptions in literature of representative figures in Afrikaans and Dutch literature.

Martie Preller received the Alba Bouwer prize for childrenÆs literature for her book Die Balkieboek and for his book Geraamtes dra nie klere nie, Jan Vermeulen was awarded the Scheepers prize for youth literature.

Tom Dreyer was honoured with the Eugene Marais award for his book, Stinkafrikaners.

The Christo Wiese medal for emerging entrepreneurs went to Gerhard Jooste, a director and shareholder in Atterbury Property.

University of Stellenbosch (US) History department member Dr Jan Visagie received the DF du Toit Malherbe award for genealogical research and his continuous contributions to this field of study and in particular for his work, Voortrekkerstamouers 1835 - 1945.

University of Cape Town (UCT) political studies dean Professor Andre du Toit received the Stals award for philosophy.

Professor Hermann Giliomee a UCT emeritus professor is the recipient of the Stals award for political sciences and for his outstanding contribution to the knowledge and understanding of both South African politics and comparative politics.

The Frans du Toit medal for industrial management went to Pieter Cox, managing director and executive chief of Sasol Ltd. The award goes to candidates for creative contributions to South African industrial life and continuous extension over a long period in the area he/she works in.

Professor Pedro Crous of the plant pathology department at the US received the Havenga prize for biological sciences after establishing himself in a very short time as a "very productive and creative microbiologist and plant pathologist".

Professor Willie Jonker of the US was honoured as a highly acclaimed systematic theologist with the NP van Wyk Louw medal.
