Abuja - Heads of state and governments in West Africa have extended the
moratorium placed on the importation and manufacture of light
weapons for another three years with effect from July 5.
The Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), a sub-
regional grouping of countries in West Africa, stated in Abuja
Monday that the moratorium was "the first of its kind in the
world".
The moratorium was first declared in Abuja on October 31, 1998, as part of plans aimed at establishing a culture of peace, a data bank and a register of small arms in the sub-region. - Sapa-DPA
