2001-08-29 13:01
South African music is set to dominate local culture this week as pubs, shops, radio stations and television channels, conference centres, studios, school and community halls are being peppered with South African songs.
Music Week is regarded as among the most important mechanisms for promoting South African music and artists.
Afrikaans music is well represented during Music Week. Singer Mel Botes can be heard at the High Street Theatre in Bellville on Wednesday night. Other local venues where Music Week is being celebrated include the Dorp Street Theatre (Stellenbosch), The Green Dolphin (Waterfront), Artscape (Cape Town)
and DizzyÆs Jazz Cafê (Camps Bay).
Five gigantic murals with Music Week as theme were put up in Gauteng and Cape Town's busiest streets to promote the event among motorists. In displaying the posters the organisers are trying to promote the creativity and diversity of a variety of local artists.
Artists who painted the 43 De Villiers Street mural in Cape Town include Sky 1, Smirk and Ice of Wots Advertising.
Music WeekÆs slogan: "Ek së Mamela", is clearly visible as well as a singer and DJ making music.
