Florence, Italy - A man who shed the female clothes he was wearing in front of Michelangelo's David while his friends filmed and photographed the performance was fined 400 000 lire ($197) by a court here on Monday.
The 36-year-old Italian who lives in Paris was found guilty of
"acts contrary to public decency" the Italian news agency ANSA
reported.
The incident in the Galleria dell'Accademia museum occurred in
January 1998.
Tourists then looked on in shock when the man, who was not
identified in the ANSA report, stripped down to his skimpy
underpants. The film was seized.
Florence's courthouse was closed for the day, and Accademia
officials had no comment.
A celebration of the nude, Michelangelo's early 16th-century work
shows the Biblical hero moments before his victory over Goliath.
Originally installed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio town hall, the
statue is now exhibited in the museum. - Sapa-AP
