Cape Town - The first episode of the eagerly-anticipated Survivor South Africa drew over 1.2 million viewers, M-Net says.

It was the most-watched episode of a reality show broadcast on M-Net to date - including the finals of previous hits like Idols and Big Brother.

M-Net's Carl Fischer promises that the show will only get better.

"We're extremely happy with the quality and content of the first episode, and are pleased that so many viewers tuned in to see our first group of South African Survivors," he says.

"Viewers can expect unbelievable drama, action and surprising twists which are set to make Survivor South Africa a Sunday night must-see.

Don Soper, a 54-year-old businessman from Hurlingham Manor, Johannesburg, became the first contestant to be voted off the programme.

  • Don't miss episode two this Sunday at 18:00 on M-Net's Open Time.

The show also repeats on M-Net Series, Fridays at 22:00.
