Johannesburg - The N1 highway was closed to traffic from Midrand to Nasrec on Sunday for an emergency drill ahead of the closing of the World Cup, Johannesburg metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said all on-ramps and off-ramps were closed to enable emergency vehicles to run on the highway as part of a training session involving the police, army and emergency services.

Motorists were advised to use the M1 and N3 instead.

Minnaar said the highway would be open at 14:00.
