While the powers-that-be try to sort out the electricity crisis, you can also do your bit.

Lights

  • When no one is in a room - switch off the lights.
  • Use energy-saving fluorescent bulbs - these use 80% less electricity than ordinary bulbs and last six times longer.

    Appliances

  • Switch off your TV, computers and radios when you're not using them and unplug your cellphone charger.
  • Turn down the thermostat on your refrigerator and don't open the door unnecessarily.
  • Defrost your freezer regularly.
  • Don't fill up the kettle for only one cuppa.
  • To defrost food - leave it in the fridge for a few hours instead of using the microwave.
  • When it comes to ironing - switch off once it has reached the desired temperature.
  • When using the dishwasher - fill it completely before operating and keep the filter clean.
  • Insulate your home to keep warm during winter and cool in summer - thereby reducing the need for fans and heaters.

    Geyser

According to Eskom, water heating accounts for 30-50% of the electricity consumed by an average household.

  • Install a geyser blanket - it prevents heat loss and costs about R150.
  • Eskom recommends you turn down your geyser thermostat to 60°C.
  • Take a quick shower instead of a bath.
  • Use the power of the sun by installing a solar water heater. It will set you back between R7 900 and R11 900, but is also good for the environment as there are no harmful emissions associated with electricity production.

    Swimming pool

  • Reduce the time you operate your pool pump.
  • Cover your pool - it keeps it cleaner, requiring the filter to run less often.

    Cooking

  • Keep oven doors closed until food is cooked.
  • Limit your cooking time by using a pressure cooker or use appliances that use less electricity ex: toaster, skillet.
  • Invest in a gas stove.
  • How about a braai or candlelight dinner?

    Laundry

  • Make sure you have a full load of washing before turning on the machine.
  • Front loader or top loader? According to the Eskom website a front loader uses much less water and is cheaper to operate.
  • Dryers with humidity control are reportedly the most efficient; also use correct temperature settings to reduce electricity use.

Send us your power saving tips.
