One of the linchpins in the celebrated Poland side that finished third at the 1982 World Cup. Achieved great success with Legia Warsaw in the mid-1990s, when they won back-to-back doubles before reaching the Champions League quarter-finals in 1996.

Has been coach since December 2000 and remains broadly popular despite a desperate performance at the 2002 finals.

Player to watch: Maciej Zurawski

Nicknamed 'Magic' Zurawski by fans at his Scottish club Celtic, Zurawski has been a relatively late bloomer who will shoulder the goal-scoring responsibilities for Poland in Germany.

Found the net seven times during the Poles qualifying campaign, and enjoyed a prolific first season at Celtic where he finished with 19 goals and a league title winners medal.
