AD: No testosterone cricket

2007-04-23 16:01

Johannesburg - Allan Donald is hoping the the Proteas don't resort to "testosterone cricket" in their ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final against Australia in St Lucia on Wednesday.

The former South African strike bowler, who is now a cricket commentator with SuperSport, believes Graeme Smith's side can beat Ricky Ponting's tournament favourites, provided they remain calm and control their emotions in what is certain to be a charged-up atmosphere.

"There is no doubt that Australia are favourites to win the World Cup," said Donald. "They were criticised coming into the event (after losses to England and New Zealand), but they have played superbly in the World Cup and have hardly put a foot wrong.

"However, they know South Africa can beat them, as happened in the 438 match at the Wanderers."

Donald believes the key to South Africa's chances of victory is their front-line bowlers.

"Matthew Hayden has been unstoppable, but the bowlers have allowed him to dominate them. He hasn't really been tested by someone going really hard at him yet.

Controlled aggression

"If we can get some serious aggression - and I mean controlled aggression - going up front, they could be in for a surprise.

"The Australian middle and lower order batsmen haven't had too much batting in this tournament. If we can have Australia at 40 for two or three, they might just feel the pressure.

"Until now, their middle order guys have got to the wicket with the score on 180 or 200 for two. It will be interesting to see how they can cope with a bit of pressure on."

Donald has been particularly impressed with the form of Andre Nel, who has been one of South Africa's best bowlers in the tournament.

"I don't know if someone had a chat to him. Against England he was aggressive but without that moronic approach. He has been bowling superbly and if he can maintain that against Australia, without resorting to too much lip, he could be the trump card.

"South Africa have been talking about this "brave cricket" for a while now. This is the time to produce it."

  • The match will be televised live on SuperSport 2 and SuperSport 7 (widescreen) from 15:00.
