Rome - Former world champion pole vaulter Giuseppe Gibilisco was banned for two years by the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) on Wednesday for his involvement in a doping scandal.
The 28-year-old was found guilty of having worked with Carlo Santuccione, an Italian doctor under investigation for supplying several high-profile sportsmen with doping products.
Gibilisco, a bronze medallist at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, is understood to have taken or having attempted to take performance-enhancing drugs.
Earlier this month Italy's Olympic Committee (Coni), the country's governing body for sport, recommended a two-year ban for Gibilisco after their anti-doping prosecutor had examined the evidence.
On Tuesday Santuccione, who has been under investigation by Italian police since 2003, was invited by Coni to attend a hearing to give his version of events.
