Johannesburg - The National Olympic Committee of South Africa (Nocsa) has suspended its secretary general Dan Moyo and an executive comittee member Leonard Chuene, the National Executive Comittee (NEC) has confirmed.
"At a special meeting of the NOCSA Executive Committee on Wednesday executive committee member Leonard Chuene was suspended for the public statements about Nocsa attributed to him..
"Given the fact that these alleged statements have the effect of bringing Nocsa into disrepute and they are reported at a time when the Executive Committee has been involved in resolving a similar issue, aggravates the situation.
"The Executive Committee therefore resolved to suspend him with immediate effect in terms of Article 8.3.2 of the Nocsa constitution, pending a disciplinary hearing."
According to Moss Mashishi, 1st vice president of Nocsa and spokesperson on the above issue "it is an internal matter which is being dealt with by the Executive Committee in terms of the powers vested in it by the Nocsa constitution".
It was alo announced that the executive committee at its meeting on March 27 2003 suspended its secretary general Dan Moyo pending a disciplinary hearing, in terms of Article 8.3.2 of the constitution.
"This was subject to a further 72 hours opportunity for him to co-operate with the process set up by the committee in the interests of a speedy resolution of the matter. This is after numerous efforts to secure his co-operation in this regard.
"Moyo's suspension follows as a result of statements attributed to him that appeared in newspaper articles last year. These statements have the potential to bring Nocsa into disrepute.
"Since the above prescribed period expired by close of business on Wednesday without meaningful co-operation, the decision of the NEC came into effect and the secretary general is forthwith suspended pending a disciplinary hearing which will be constituted within a reasonable time period."
