Athens - The sports editor of Greek daily Eleftherotypia, well known for exposés on football hooliganism and clubs' financial problems, was hospitalised on Monday after being badly beaten by three unknown men, police said.
Philippos Syrigos, 55, received blows to his head with an iron bar after making a radio broadcast and underwent an operation, police said.
Government spokesperson Theodore Roussopoulos condemned "any attack against journalists. These actions harm the freedom of the press and freedom of expression, which are safeguarded by the constitution."
"It's an extreme act of fanaticism," said Eleftherotypia managing director Seraphim Fyntanidis.
"In the past, we had political murders, today we have football-related murders," Fyntanidis said.
