Bulls could bully Leopard cub

2001-08-17 08:11

Potchefstroom - Leopards coach Nico Serfontein is expecting the Blue Bulls to intimidate the Leopards' 19-year-old flyhalf Francois Swart in their Bankfin Currie Cup encounter at Olen Park on Friday evening.

"Francois has come a long way with the Blue Bulls and played Craven Week rugby for the union last year.

"He is therefore no stranger to the Pretorians and I expect them to put him under pressure from the start," Serfontein said.

After Swart made his provincial Currie Cup debut as a substitute against Western Province, he retained his place in the side that went down 26-39 to the Border Bulldogs. Northwest had little possession in the East London match, but Swart contributed 16 points with his boot.

SwartÆs kicking was almost faultless at the Absa Stadium en he succeeded with five out of six attempts, including a monster 50m penalty kick.

The home side would want to remedy its two defeats on Friday evening and anything less than a win could make their journey into the Top Eight a tough one.

The Leopards couldnÆt have asked for a tougher assignment. Apart from three defeats against the Pumas, the Blue Bulls have won all their encounters this year.

"They have been written off by some," Serfontein said about Heyneke Meyer's Blue Bulls. "But their 54-18 victory over the Bulldogs proved that they are good."

The Blue Bulls are third on the log in Division Y with nine points after three matches, while the Leopards are still without points after two games.

Tiaan Joubert, who replaces the injured Danie van Schalkwyk at inside centre, is the only change to the Blue Bulls team that beat the Bulldogs.
