Johannesburg - Soccer officials said on Monday that nearly 40 000 South Africans volunteered to help with the Fifa Confederations Cup next year.

The Fifa World Cup Organising Committee said: "The volunteer application process for the Fifa Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 closed this weekend, with a whopping 37 408 South African residents responding to the call for volunteers."

About 17 262 Johannesburg residents registered as volunteers, followed by 7 401 Mangaung and Bloemfontein residents, 6 764 Rustenburg residents and 5 981 people living in Pretoria.

The organising committee said it would select 4 030 volunteers.
