Gianfranco Zola retires

Rome - Gianfranco Zola announced his retirement from soccer on Wednesday, ending a career that saw the Sardinian star for teams in Italy's Serie A and the English Premier League.
The 38-year-old striker said that he would not play for his club, Cagliari, next season to pursue other interests and spend more time with his family.
"It was not an easy decision and it required some time," he said at a media conference. "I think the moment has come for me to dedicate myself to those things that I've neglected over these years."
Before returning to his native Cagliari in 2003, Zola spent five years at Chelsea, where he became one of the best players in the English Premier League and was named player of the year.
In 2004, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II awarded Zola the Order of the British Empire for being an "ambassador of football and a role model for many young fans."
Upon returning to Italy, Zola led the Sardinia-based Cagliari back into the top division in his first season and helped the team avoid relegation this year.
"My dream was to help this team to return and stay in the Serie A," Zola said. "I think I have given my contribution and this is something that fills me with pride."
Zola made his Serie A debut in 1989 for Napoli, which then included Diego Maradona. He also played for top division team Parma.
Zola's plans were unclear but he is set to carry the 2006 Turin Olympics torch through his native Sardinia in December.
