London - Portsmouth ended a run of six successive Premier League defeats when they won 3-0 at Everton on Saturday while Hull City's flying start ended emphatically when they were thrashed 5-0 at home by Wigan Athletic.
Last season's FA Cup winners Portsmouth, who last tasted
league victory at West Ham United on April 8, took charge with
early goals by Jermain Defoe and Glen Johnson and, after Everton
missed a penalty, added a third which Defoe and Peter Crouch
could argue about on the journey home.
Hull had begun their first season in the top flight with a
win and a draw but were swept aside by a Wigan team who, like
Portsmouth, had begun the campaign with two defeats.
West Ham beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1, Middlesbrough beat Stoke
City 2-1, Bolton Wanderers v West Bromwich Albion was goalless,
while Arsenal were playing Newcastle United later.
