Lagos - Gunmen in two speed boats abducted two Lebanese citizens and killed two policemen in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta, police said on Thursday.

The police officers worked as bodyguards for the Lebanese men, who were employed for a construction company in southern Bayelsa State, according to the state's police spokesperson Astimin Butswat.

"A massive manhunt has been launched to rescue the victims and arrest the suspects," Butswat said in a statement.

Kidnappings of foreigners for ransom are common in the Niger Delta, the source of Nigeria's oil wealth.

The West African nation is the continent's largest oil producer and the sixth largest producer of oil in the world.
