3 300-strong world force for Mali

2012-11-11 22:42

Abuja - A West African summit on Sunday agreed to an international force of 3 300 troops with a one-year mandate to wrest control of northern Mali from Islamist extremists, Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara said.

"We foresee 3 300 soldiers for a timeframe of one year," Ouattara told journalists after the summit of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

The troops would come primarily from Ecowas nations, but possibly from countries outside the bloc as well, he said.

Ouattara said he hoped UN Security Council approval could come in late November or early December, which would allow the force to be put in place days afterward. The plan is to be transferred to the UN through the African Union.

90% of Mali's population is Sunni Islam. The extremists represent the new international puritanical Islam. The ECOWAS initiative through OAU is an attempt to get international funding for a North African War. Chairman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma laments 97% of OAU projects are funded by foreign donors. Let's hope the UN turns ECOWAS down.

If we send troops to Mali, it should be to re-install the democratically elected president. It should not be to re-enforce the coup leaders. The evil Islamics (as u call them) accepted democracy but is refusing to accept the coup. Lets use these troops to bring back their democratically elected president instead of fighting those that don't accept the coup, Muslim or other wise.

Let there be no time waste for that job to take place, because wasting time will mean giving those islamists a time to regroup properly and plan ahead, we need to see Mali back to the times when it was free from violance and terrorists for the sake of Malians and peace in African continent. Lastly, those who are arrested during that opperation and be found guilty should be taken to the haugue for trial and if found guilty be sentenced for life or death sentence as they are bad elements in African continent.
