Arusha - Three Tanzanian journalists were charged with sedition for an article accusing the police of serving the interests of the ruling party, one of the accused said on Wednesday.

Article author Samson Mwigamba, editor Absalom Kibanda, both of the newspaper Daima Tanzania (Tanzania Forever in Kiswahili), and newspaper publisher Theophil Makunga of Mwananchi Communications Limited were charged in court on Tuesday.

Prosecution lawyers allege the article was a call to police to not recognise the authority of government.

"It was the preliminary hearing... We read the charges and we have rejected them because they are baseless," Mwigamba told AFP.

"The judge set the next hearing for August 7, and we asked through our lawyer that we can receive a paper version of the facts so we can prepare our defence," he added.

The three defendants face heavy fines and up to two years in prison if convicted.
