Mogadishu - Five people, including a Somali lawmaker and two police officers, were killed and 26 were injured on Friday in an attack at a hotel in Mogadishu that bore the imprint of the Islamist al-Shabaab militia.

The two other people among the dead were civilians, Somali police spokesperson General Mohamed Yusuf Madaale told reporters.

Police arrested several suspects, including a man with a laptop computer who Madaale said was going to plant explosive material while he was inside the hotel.

But he was unable to because people in the hotel stopped him. He then tried to explode a hand grenade, but it harmed no one in the hotel, the police spokesperson said.

The second blast was a car full of explosives parked outside the hotel. That is what caused the deaths and injuries, Madaale said.
