Zanzibar - A ferry carrying 600 people sank off Zanzibar overnight, but at least 250 have been rescued, a local government official said on Saturday.

"We managed to rescue 250 people so far including 20 children [but] rescue operations are hampered by a lack of equipment," deputy secretary of state for infrastructure and communication Issa Gavu told AFP.

For how many people was this ferry designed? Were there any life-jackets on board? Does Zanzibar have something resembling a Coast Guard?

I agree with Yoni. What measurements are being taken when looking after other peoples lives.

we once took one of these veries to Zanzibar and i must admit i was dam worried. not that there was anything with them, but just the thought of us being hijacked by the pirates or the ferry sinking was very uncomfortable. My travell mates slept most of the trip but i could'nt. its now shocking to hear that a ferry has sunk. condolences to those who have lost the loved ones. Tanzania need to improve their infrustructure or else they'll loose torist, which one of the biggest economic drive in that country..
