Accra – A 64 year old Ghanaian woman was jailed on Friday for attempting to smuggle heroin into the United States, reports Ghana Web.

Rose Amanor was sentenced to more than two years in prison after she was caught last year smuggling heroin stuffed inside dried fish into the United States at the John F Kennedy Airport.

Amanor managed to get away with a shorter sentence after she told the court that she was coerced by her son to smuggle the drugs.

Pleading with the court, the elderly woman said: "I am asking you to have mercy on me so I can go home to my family and enjoy whatever time I have left with my family."

However the federal judge, Judge Eric Vitaliano, residing over the case called her out, saying that she had an "incessant number of fishy stories". He questioned how, at her age, she would not have known that she was committing a crime.

According to Ghana Business News, West Africa is a transit point for traffickers to smuggle drugs into Europe.
