'African mercenaries' helping Gaddafi

2011-02-22 15:22

Stockholm - "African mercenaries" have been brought in to Libya and are shooting at anyone who tries to go outside, exiled Libyans in Sweden said Tuesday, quoting witnesses back home.

"They are African mercenaries bought by Gaddafi. They come from Chad and Nigeria among other places," Shaban Egale, 50, tells AFP, pointing out that "many Libyan soldiers have taken the side of the demonstrators".

"Those who are shooting are elite soldiers and mercenaries," insists Egale, one of around 50 people braving a snowstorm in central Stockholm to protest the violence in Libya during the past week of demonstrations against Moamer Kadhafi's four-decade rule.

Following a day of cut communications on Monday, several other Libyan exiles in Sweden said they had received word from their family and friends in Libya this morning that mercenaries were involved in the brutal crackdown on demonstrators.

"I spoke for a few minutes on the phone with my cousin Yacine in Tripoli this morning. He told me that if people went outside, mercenaries shot at them," says Joe Twaeih, a 37-year-old Libyan refugee who has been living in Stockholm for nine years.

"They are not Libyans. He knows that because he heard the soldiers speaking French together," he told AFP as the demonstrators shouted "Down with the dictator!" and "Gaddafi, murderer!" at Sergels Torg in the heart of Stockholm.

"We will stay here until Gaddafi  leaves, Inch'Allah!," says Esameddan Ayad, a 26-year-old Libyan student who recently arrived in Sweden, wrapped in a thick blanket.

"It is cold of course, but this is nothing compared to what our brothers are enduring in Libya," he said, as a demonstrator behind him waved the old Libyan flag - in red, black and green with a white crecent and star in the middle - which was used before Gaddafi seized power nearly 42 years ago.

  • Vaal Donkie - 2011-02-22 15:30

What are they doing in Sweden? How did they even get there? Why didn't their neighbouring countries fling open their gates and welcome their brothers?

      geyser.cape - 2011-02-22 15:55

Listen Donkie, these people emigrated to Sweden, just as you or your parents emigrated to Africa.

      MadMatt_88 - 2011-02-22 16:13

We emmigrated here and became more productive members of society than the original inhabitants. We did not come here as refugees begging for things.

      Eagle24 - 2011-02-22 16:32

MadMatt_88 You really believe in that noise that's coming out of ur bek. No1 called in in this country and we didn't need ur help at all infact pack ur bags and bounce and we see if we won't survive. Be gratefull to be part of such a beautifull country and wot we do with it is none of ur FBS....Stop talking and get stepping....Africa is for all Africans and those who want to be African, ever heard of the saying If you can't beat us Join us? Is dat perhaps the reason why you are in this country...LMAO

      Sailor - 2011-02-22 16:37

@madmatt - one day the lazy indigenous people will get tired of the likes of you and kick u out. whatever u think u built was done by the resources, sweat and blood of the same people that you so callously insult. Today is Gaddaffi. Tomorrow is you and yours - just continue with the frot attitude fo now.

      carldecarvalho - 2011-02-22 16:43

@ geyser.cape You are the Donkie, them and the rest of the useless African and middle eastern countries come over here to Sweden and the rest of europe looking for a free handout, sounds a little like your ANC supporters.

  • DAB - 2011-02-22 15:31

And this clown Gaddafi wanted to be president of a "United States of Africa". A "truly democratic African"

  • Jullemoer - 2011-02-22 15:33

      Homo-Sapien - 2011-02-22 15:39

      julle moer is getoets

  • Simon - 2011-02-22 15:33

Bloody mercinaries always caught on the wrong side.

      Logs01 - 2011-02-22 17:05

Money Talks!! They do not have a right side or wrong. They kill for those that pays best.

  • MadMatt_88 - 2011-02-22 15:36

And this dude, Mandela's friend, the Brother Leader, wanted to be president (emperor, moghul, whatever)of a Union of African States. Bwahahahaha!

  • Maki - 2011-02-22 15:41

If someone doesnt do something fast, this will become a civil war. I hope there are no South African Mercenaries doing this crap.

      foitapoilet - 2011-02-22 15:47

yes we need them here for our civil unrest when it starts soon.

      Logs01 - 2011-02-22 17:16

@Maki, ANC rulers have a slight problem: They can't rely on their "old Friends" anymore when they are going to need help in Future, to hang on to SA. These "Old Friends" got their hands full at the moment and are FALLING one after the other. Neither is the ANC in a posision to help the "Old Friends" as well. "Old Friends" must be really pissed Off, cause the ANC owe them!! Even the silence from the ANC is deafening, cause they are shaken, silenced by what is happening, knows the old "Allies" are NOT there anymore and their turn might just be around the corner. Scary!!!!

  • Ross - 2011-02-22 15:47

This criminal must not be allowed entry into any country. Gaddafi and son must be tried in their own country by Libians. They will in all probability do the trapdoor-fandangle like old Saddam. The mercenaries must be excecuted by firing squad.

  • smscott4 - 2011-02-22 15:51

the country that takes this c*&t in should get nuked

  • Audrey - 2011-02-22 15:55

A good leader is one who knows when is time to step down!! somebody offer those mercenaries more money so they shoot Gaddafi instead!

      gburger2254 - 2011-02-22 16:24

Please show me one leader in Africa that went quitly, just one

      Jo - 2011-02-22 16:36

      Nelson Mandela, for starters.

      W H Kotze - 2011-02-22 16:49

@ Jo. But where is Nelson and his cronies now? Their friend is in need.

  • Eric - 2011-02-22 15:56

This fiasco is horrible...but this seems that region seems to have reached a evolutionary turning point where they want too evolve away from stupid politicians “Zama should we lurn from this???”

  • ? - 2011-02-22 15:59

Libya isnt like Tunisia or Egypt.Gadaffi wont go without a proper fight, this is a different battle. If they want Gadaffi out, they better use a crowbar.

  • lldoidge - 2011-02-22 16:00

Check their t-shirts and party cards? You never know, the ANC owes Gidaffi big time! Just saying!

      exocist - 2011-02-22 21:25

they can't help gadaffi cause they stole the state coffers empty with too many party's and bling TICK TOCK TICK TOCK

  • Verbatim - 2011-02-22 16:01

There are already videos out of executed mercenaries, and they are as black as night. The sh1t is really flying out there.

  • Mlu - 2011-02-22 16:05

Are there any ex-Koevoet members amongst the mercenaries?

      lldoidge - 2011-02-22 16:08

Nah! Last I heard these Koevoet guys were white!

      Joe_Cool - 2011-02-22 16:33

I dont think an ex koevoet member will fight for a pig head like gaddafi. Its some black brothers from Africa

      Jo - 2011-02-22 16:41

weird, second person asking this question. In all the conflicts in central Africa, do you think that there are only white mercenaries? How can we introduce you to world and local history, or Google? Growing up under apartheid, I always thought that it must be hard to be a racist - it's such a narrow and boring view - and I see that it's the same today. Whether you hate black or white, it's the same boring and tiny-minded view point. Widen your mind, bitterness is making you blind and foolish.

  • exocist - 2011-02-22 16:10

all these african countries are shiting themselves, they are sending each other help to prop up and protect their self enrichment way of life,on the sweat of the masses, they are getting scared that it's their turn next, it's just a matter of time even for this country, YOU CAN'T FOOL ALL THE PEOPLE ALL THE TIME, greed and selfenrichment will eventualy bring them down

  • exocist - 2011-02-22 16:22

it's strange how these african countries managed to catch those mercenaries so easily that were jailed in ZIMBABWE, now because this is one of their bedfellows every african country turns a blind eye to this lot thats operating in LIBIA it really makes you wonder about proping up and supporting dictators

  • - 2011-02-22 16:24

Ride the wave of revolution and help yourselves to a better life - down with Gaddafi and all he stands/stood for - swing him by the neck - even that's to humane.

  • Goose - 2011-02-22 16:31

Gaddafi and son are p!ss!ng their pants! They know now that when the "people" take over they are going to be shot or hanged for killing thousands of his very own people! Murdering thug!

  • African'shtr - 2011-02-22 16:44

shoot to kill, south africa is the fourth country to take part on protest and our leader its gona be Vavi

  • goyougoodthing - 2011-02-22 17:04

If these are 'Mercenaries' then what is the difference between 'mercenaries' and the ANC who love the Colonel?

      Wes - 2011-02-22 17:20

  • Morne - 2011-02-22 17:14

If there were any South African Mercenaries, the war would've been over already !! And by the way, KOEVOET and 32 Batallion had plenty of black soldiers, fighting for them... These Guys used to be the most feared soldiers in Africa, now they're just sitting around, unemployed because, the ANC won't integrate them in the SANDF because they fought for "The oppressors"... If I needed some Mercs, those are the people I'd go to....

      TrueReason - 2011-02-22 22:01

"Just sitting around". Then who is lazy, while the only trade which most whites are capable of is killing, by the way, trained to do.

  • Andy49 - 2011-02-22 17:19

So it's OK for 'Mercenaries' to be used to shoot @ & murder innocent civilians protesting against a dictator, but it's not OK for any country to use mercenaries to assist the populace with overthrowing that self same dictator?

  • Sege - 2011-02-22 17:44

It is amazing that some people still talk like Vaal Donkie and MadMatt_88. You seem to think you are better that African people, you guys are probably bitter white boys still leaving in your parents house and driving your grandfather's 1952 VW beetle. Get a life guys. Thank God not all white south africans are like you guys
