Africans urge Libya political solution

Addis Ababa - African leaders on Wednesday urged a political solution to the long-running Libyan conflict as they opened talks in the Ethiopian capital over the troubled north African state.

"I am convinced that only a political solution can lead to a lasting peace and satisfy the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people," said Jean Ping, head of the AU Commission, the pan-African bloc's executive body.

Members of the African Union's ad hoc panel on Libya had begun discussions ahead of a special summit over the Libyan crisis later Wednesday.

The AU is opposed to the military action against Muammar Gaddafi's regime and last month proposed a ceasefire plan, which was rejected by the Libyan rebels who insisted on Gaddafi's departure.

The Libyan strongman however readily accepted the plan. The AU also proposed a transition period for negotiations to organise elections.

The AU's proposals for resolving Libya's months-long crisis, including a mediation team made up of African heads of state, have largely been ignored.

The ad hoc panel on Libya is headed by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and comprises the leaders of Uganda, Mali, Congo and South Africa.

Gadhafi and his sons have an enormous debt to repay the Libyan people and humanity. It cannot easily repaid. In any event, they have chosen "to live and die in Libya". Until they change this decision, mediating is largely a waste of time.

They are missing all the dosh Gaddafi used to fling around to buy influence in Africa. Why do you think Zuma wants to see him again?

You don't have to care because you are careless...we talking about the lives of lybyans and instead you mention zumma and malema, then i i may ask what for?

And so again our esteemed AU wants a dictator to be given a transition period to get back to where he started from. Unbelievable!

The African political "solution" for ZANU PFs lost election in Zimbabwe was to keep Bob Mugabe in power.

      senkgisha - 2011-05-26 12:57

Because he is a good president not the stupid Thzangarai...are you expecting mugabe to take his country back tothe looters?
