Kano - At least 16 people died after two suicide bombers attacked a housing estate in north-east Nigeria on Wednesday, the head of the region's emergency services said.

The attack happened at the Buhari Housing Estate in the town of Damaturu in Yobe state, Alhaji Musa Idi told dpa.

"Two teenage bombers were involved in the explosion at Buhari estate where around 16 persons were killed in the two locations hit this morning," he said.

The 16 dead include the two teenage suicide bombers.

Nigeria has been hit by a spate of bombings in recent years, largely blamed on the militant group Boko Haram.

In one of the latest incidents, 18 people died after suicide bombers attacked the towns of Kuje and Nyanya on the outskirts of Nigeria's capital Abuja at the weekend.

On Thursday last week, four female suicide bombers killed at least 14 people in Maiduguri in north-eastern Nigeria.

Boko Haram, which seeks to establish a state with a strict interpretation of Islamic law, has killed an estimated 14 000 people since 2009.
