Beware, female journos in Cairo warned

2011-11-25 15:11

Paris - Press watchdog Reporters Without Borders urged media organisations on Friday to take care to protect female reporters from sexual assault while covering unrest in Egypt, following several serious attacks.

The group initially warned women journalists not to work in Cairo's Tahrir Square, epicentre of the revolt against Egypt's junta, at all, but after protests from press unions decided instead to advise great caution.

"It is more dangerous for a woman than a man to cover the demonstrations in Tahrir Square. That is the reality and the media must face it," RSF said.

"It is the first time that there have been repeated sexual assaults against women reporters in the same place. The media must keep this in mind when sending staff there and must take special safety measures.

"We are not saying the international media should pull out and stop covering events in Egypt, but they need to adapt to the threats that currently exist. Women journalists going to Tahrir Square should be aware of this situation."

For the past week Tahrir Square has seen mass protests and violent clashes between regime forces and pro-democracy campaigners demanding an end to trial by military tribunal and a faster transition to civilian rule.

On Thursday, French television reporter Caroline Sinz from the state network France 3 was subjected to a violent sexual assualt by a gang of young men and boys and her cameraman was beaten as they tried to cover the revolt.

Sexual aggression

The attacks came shortly after Egyptian-American journalist Mona Eltahawy reported that she had been the victim of a grotesque sexual assault by police after she was arrested during the protests.

Both cases recalled the February 11 sexual assault on South African CBS correspondent Lara Logan, who was seized by a mob as she worked in the square.

Several other women, both Egyptian and foreign, have complained of sexual aggression from both protesters and security forces.

According to a study carried out in 2008 by the Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights, more than 80% of Egyptian women suffer sexual assault or harrassment ranging from remarks to leering, half of them on daily basis.

In an initial statement issued late on Thursday, Reporters Without Borders had called on media organisations to temporarily stop sending women to cover the street fighting, but this advice was later withdrawn.

The journalism branch of France's CGT union argued that editors should not decide which reporters to assign to stories based on their gender nor give in to those who would limit women "to the role of wife or mother".

Islam respects women, right? Must be Jewish infiltrators doing the harassing.

      Fred - 2011-11-25 16:14

Perhaps these jounos need Muslim Batman Helper outfits to protect themselves against the depraved Muslim men.

Obviously there is some reason the west would like to discredit this revolution. At stake is the remnants of the US puppet regime of Mubarak, and the US trained military officers. I distrust these reports of sexual harassment by western reporters. You may be on to something Jim.

      Jim - 2011-11-25 17:32

Can't believe that the other replies to your comment don't regnize sarcasm. islam is the opposite of respect to woman and islam blames EVERYTHING on jews.

What can one expect from a pernicious islamic culture where women are property and sexuality so repressed in the name of a god.Does not anyone as well find it sickening they turn to little boys for pleasure just as frequently ?.

      Devon - 2011-11-26 20:54

You know if you have a culture that's so "heavenly" that women aren't even safe then I say that culture and religion is no earthly good.

      chrisemz2011 - 2011-11-26 20:59

@mike, pretty pathetic when a comparison to a ghetto neighborhood in South Central LA is ones first retort.

  • HMichaelHawk - 2011-11-25 15:43

Failure to recognize and act on the reality of violence which pervades these "demonstrations" against women reporters is simply irresponsible on Media Management. You can beat your chest all you want about "equality" and "fairness" of media assignments, but the fact remains, when a woman is assigned to cover a raging crowd of young males, she is going to be a serious risk of sexual assault. To believe otherwise is to engage in Magical Thinking! And at the risk of being accused of blaming the victim, women who accept such assignments do so with full knowledge of to what they may be subjected. If reporting is more important to a woman than her sexual safety, far be it for me to limit her opportunities. But, also, far be it from me to extend much sympathy when such attacks occur. It's not as though everyone has no other options, is it?

      Ken - 2011-11-26 00:44

It's not magical thinking, it's liberal thinking.

  • Christopher - 2011-11-25 16:03

The term "sexual assault" encompasses everything from leering and catcalls to gang-rape. This article should use words like gang rape if that is what happened to the reporters in egypt.

      Paul - 2011-11-25 16:33

But, But, But... then you might have politicians and reporters who have to tell the truth about sensitive things that don't fit into their lies.... I mean political beliefs.

      Constance - 2011-11-25 16:55

Christopher - Gang rape is what happened to the reporters in Egypt. Feel better now?

      rstanaford - 2011-11-25 18:00

It depends on who you ask, Christopher. According to the last, say, hundred years of politics and education influenced by feminism, all forms of unwanted attention are some form of rape. No means no and rape is rape. Period. That's why the article was written the way it was. It doesn't matter who you are or what you're about, men are predators and you were expected to read that article in that context. Haven't you been paying attention?

      Jim - 2011-11-25 23:59

Grabbing her breasts, gropping her genitals and this was done by the security police who had her blindfolded for a few days, face it christopher, they disrespect women as a matter of fact as easily as the breathe day in and day out

  • E.C. - 2011-11-25 16:24

Funny, yet predictable, how Western political correctness, which tries to treat all cultures as morally neutral, or morally equal, gets s slap in the face as reality sets in over how a non-Western, Islamic culture treats women. Let them get a good look at the moral rot that is at the center of an Islamic tribal system of law. Maybe the Judeo-Christian culture has something to say after all about mutual respect of both men and women made in the image of God. That's what secular humanism borrows from to beef up its own expectation on how women ought to be treated. It does not come from humanism itself since it denies such moral absolutes. Nor does it come from Islam, which has always had a heritage of women being severely restricted and, with children, being the mere property and pleasure of men. Thus, multi-culturalism is a liberal Western myth.

      Wanda - 2011-11-25 23:12

E.C., you are absolutely right. Too bad but I'm afraid you are just preaching to the choir here. The p.c. elites at the universities and in the mainstream media are the ones with the megaphones.

  • penny.daugherty - 2011-11-25 16:31

Why do these idiotic female reporters put themselves in a position like this and why do the media outlets ask them to do it. If they wish to go, then they can blame themselves for whatever happens to them. These Middle Eastern countries have absolutely no respect for women, Christians or Jews and anyone going there for whatever reason can take personal respondsibility for the actions and the results thereof.

      Wanda - 2011-11-25 23:15

Why? Because they are die-hard FEMINISTS.They will never concede that they have been wrong about anything. On top of that, they are p.c. liberals

  • Epi - 2011-11-25 16:41

HMichaelHawk: "You can beat your chest all you want about "equality" and "fairness" of media assignments, but the fact remains, when a woman is assigned to cover a raging crowd of young males, she is going to be a serious risk of sexual assault." There is some truth to this, but Egypt -- and islamic culture in particular - is a special case. Rates of Sexual harassment of non-hijabbed western women in Egypt run at nearly 100%. For hijabbed women, the number is near 80%. Islam appears to create an ethos of absolute impunity when it comes to women. Basically, if they are able to get at you - i.e. you decided to leave your house without an escort - then they believe they have a right to do whatever they want to you. It's an ethos which exists in other islamic countries as well, especially those in which islamic gender apartied and purdah are enforced.

      Isaiah - 2011-11-25 16:57

I guess those 20% of hijabbed women give thanks every day that they are not assaulted. A barbaric sick culture. Can't wait for those liberal nitwits in the US to instill Sharia principles here.

      Wanda - 2011-11-25 23:25

Epi--This is why we need to defeat Islam and ROOT IT OUT. Even if we have to go to war and call it what it IS. No more mealy-mouth p/c mush. Its US or THEM.Survival of the fittist, thats ALWAYS been the rule and still is. The longer we wait the better THEIR chance of winning, and Europe will be the first to go. Hello EURABIA! and then, HELLO WORLD WIDE ISLAMIC CALIPHATE!Goodbye western civilization!

      Omnivore - 2011-11-26 10:21

"Eurabia" doesn't have to let Muslims in, yet they do.

      Denny - 2011-11-26 11:58

I think you have given us a name for this kind of barbarity: Islamic Gender Apartheid (I.G.A.). Who but the Islamofascists (even Muslims against 'Political Islam' may help) or their allies would be in opposition against rallying against Gender Apartheid? Boycotting companies who do business with countries supporting Sharia Law would be a good start if a few poser-child atrocious offenders were to be found! Maybe even the Leftists in the so-called 'Civil Rights' movement and the so-called 'Woman's Right's' movement would be forced to acknowledge that Sharia Law is WRONG -- despite Woopi Goldberg and Joy Behar having self-righteous fits when Islam or Muslims are mentioned in a bad light!!!

      Epi - 2011-11-27 12:29

Denny said, "I think you have given us a name for this kind of barbarity: Islamic Gender Apartheid (I.G.A.)" I would like to take credit, but I first heard the time from Phyllis Chesler, who has done much writing on the subject.

  • Al - 2011-11-25 16:43

Cat calls, leering, and gang rape are all the same thing? Rape is a violent violation of a human being and deserves the death penalty, at least in my opinion. Cat calls and leering are no violent and "could" make a woman feel "oppressed". Kinda like calling knifing someone or giving them "a look that kills", as both being murder. Calling leering and cat calling sexual assault dilutes the real crime of rape.

      Epi - 2011-11-25 17:03

Was your comment directed at mine? I wasn't sure. At any rate, you are right about the difference between things like cat calls vs. rape. The thing that bothers me the most about events like these is how they serve the forced islamisation of a society. You've heard of how islamic theocracies like Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, etc. make a habit of imprisoning or even flogging women who report being raped? Well, it's part of the same philosophy . . . Basically, "unislmaic behavior" on the part of a woman is deemed a legitamate defense to a charge of rape. Moreover, she needs four witnesses to the rape when she reports the crime to authorities lest she herself be charged with "unlawful fornication" by her very own "admission." Because things like going out of your house without a male relative or not wearing hijab or even niqab are considered unislamic, if you do these things, you are basically considered fair game in the islamic society. This has a way of eventually forcing ALL women to stay indoors ALL the time, and ALL women to where niqab and ALL women to never leave the house unless accompanied by a male relative. Essentially, islam creates a predatory society that recreates itself every day and forces its laws on women via a kind of brutal protection racket. Very horrible to see this process played out in places where women were once a lot freer

      rstanaford - 2011-11-25 17:44

Words can be as effective as deeds, Al. How many have committed suicide after being told, simply told that they are unloved, unwanted, etc., and died touched by no hand but their own? There is no room for moral equivocation in a feministic culture. According to the Gloria Steinems, the Take-Back-the-Niters, and Slut-walkers, all forms of unwanted attention are a form of rape. And rape is rape. That's all men are, right? Mindless, sex-charged animals that predate women as trophies of conquest. Why do you think we see articles written ever so often about "how often a man thinks about sex during the day?" On the surface, they are meant to humor, but in reality they are building a case. So it doesn't matter if you're an angry young man in a war-torn country, a father of six, or a monk under an oath of silence and celibacy. You are just as guilty of your perverse thought life as the next guy and "so a man thinks, such as he is." Such has it been for decades now. Learn your place in life and accept the role assigned to you. You'll never convince anyone otherwise.

      Ben - 2011-11-25 18:05

Well, you're missing the point of the original poster. The article references "sexual assault" and "grotesque sexual assault" etc., with NO specifics, in order to insulate the islamic barbarity from scrutiny. Sort of like when the US media write long articles about corrupt and criminal politicians without ever including the *****-D after their names. We just want the media to call a spade a spade, without the PC filters, which only further enable evil and criminal acts.

  • Isaiah - 2011-11-25 17:00

The group Reporters without Borders should change their name to Reporters without Cojones. How PC to lower the warning from dangerous to take caution. Gutless 4th estate.

  • Scott - 2011-11-25 17:02

What is equally sad is that so-called "leaders" knowingly permit such acts against humanity. Is there any wonder that there is racial disrespect and disgust by outsiders when there are such despicable acts perpetuated by barbaric peoples, most of whom just happen to have Muslim roots. Am I prejudiced towards those who do and condone sexual attack? You bet I am. Filthy pigs, scum that you are. Castrate a few million adult males and then start a strict education and reprogramming of male youth and maybe, just maybe these terrible acts by such despicable pukes will change and abate.

      Epi - 2011-11-25 17:19

"Is there any wonder that there is racial disrespect and disgust by outsiders when there are such despicable acts perpetuated by barbaric peoples, most of whom just happen to have Muslim roots." It's not "racist." It's an acknowledgement that systems of thought and law and government and religion have actual real world consquences - and they aren't always good. This is the case with islam.

This is not a pro-democracy movement; it is a pro-Islamic movement, which means they are followers of a tyrannical yoke of a false religion, which came about to glue together a group of robbers, murderers, rapists, and opportunists. It is a foreign legal system that encourages intimidation, theft and murder of non-believers. It says respect the people of the Book, yet it says you can kill them if they don’t convert. You can lie and mislead to advance your cause and not honor your word or contract. Thou you point to the peaceful verses you don’t mention that they been superseded with the verse of the sword. If you don‘t agree with them then you have to change because they won’t. Islam is a brainwashing religion that is why so many are brainless zombies. They have to pray five times a day in Arabic, to a god who is not there. So they don’t think. Why would god allow in heaven what is banned on earth? They reverence the moon and a lunatic.

We've been giving the Masonic regime over the Jews 3 billion every year. If anybody don't believe me just check for your self and see how much borrowed money has been given away. If they've taken it off line to keep it from people just email me and I'll send you a copy. Gee, when I go to a Lodge meeting, I supportan Egyptian dictator. Did George washington, Paul Revere and a host of other Freemasons ( the same people who brought you the freedom of religion clauses in the Bill of Rights) actually want an Islamic or Osirian/Isisian theocracy? Then why do I attend a christian church as do many other Masons? and, I don't understand. I can't get get my wife or kids or dogs to obey me yet I am part of a conspiracy to control the world? PS Have you ever heard of the Anti Masonic Party, America's first independent third party? Samuel Morse was involved in this. Melvin,You are almost 200 too late. I love Jesus, the Nicene Creed, the Christian church and religion and the Masonic Lodges and many others do as well. And I believe we should treat Israel as dispassionately as we do Chad, Uraguay or Laos and ris ourselves of this "entangling foreign alliance as the FreeMason George washington said in his Farewell address and not pay any hoamge tribute or obedience to Tel Aviv nor the dual IAPAC Israeli American citizens who run the FED, Treasury, and other plutocratic centers of power.

      Dorothy - 2011-11-26 18:53

Melvin, you are trying to squeeze too much information into too few words. Most people specialize in a single topic such as cooking, cars, church activity, etc. and dabble in everything else. Some are limited to Current Events of one kind or another. Fewer in number are those with knowledge of international political activity. You are trying to combine knowledge of Masonic activity with international finance, geography, and the court system and then have readers accept your analysis of the combination. Rita answers with a snarky comment rather than admit her lack of knowledge. Ken gives an affirmative without a reason. Michael says he's a Mason and ends with a Jew hating comment, thus affirming what is generally believed by Masons about Jews. I don't know whether you are right or wrong Melvin as I don't have the facts I would need to judge. If there are some readers here who would like to start broadening the base from which they make their comments, I would suggest they go to Wikipedia and look up "New World Order (conspiracy theories)" and the website Masonic High Council of Egypt, the former because of its section on Freemasonry and the latter to show that those who join the Masons tend to be the "movers and shakers" in their towns and countries. The Masons are private, secretive and internationally connected. What I haven't explored is what information there is on an overlap between the Muslims, the Egyptian government and the Masons and the US.

Then we will occupy real estate companies, automobile companies, gas and electric companies, travel agencies , four star hotels, food and up scale clothing companies... As our list of demands, I mean entilements, grows, more and more people will be working to meet our needs. Unemployment problem solved! And we won't have to pay for any of this because the government will pay all the debts! I see that liberal political correctness has replaced competence for French journalists. One does not send another into the lion's den and hope that they don't get bit! One simply doesn't send another into the lion's den. The concern should be for another's health and safety and not whether or not you are meeting the guidelines of your political ideology. By protecting women, you are not setting journalism back to the stone age! You would only be doing so if you made it illegal for all women to be journalists in France. Imbeciles!!!

Sadly true! People are even buying Butterball Turkey's that fund Terrorism with no "Halal" blessed label on them!

  • petecastleemail - 2011-11-25 21:46

Apparently, Middle Eastern Islam does not teach morals of any kind. (except "don't steal from other Muslim men"). Rape-ok, murder-ok, discrimination-ok, lying & cheating- ok, slavery-ok as long as it is against women or non-believers.

  • Dom - 2011-11-25 23:21

Any woman who goes to an Islamic country thinking Islam is just a peaceful religion just had it coming.

  • Il - 2011-11-26 00:33

What news orgs are stupid enough to send female reporters into barbaric, 3rd world hell holes like this?

  • Suzanne - 2011-11-26 01:22

Muslims hurting women? I can't believe it!

  • BeautyByCaroline - 2011-11-26 01:51

The hypocrisy and horrific abuse against women and children from the Islamic faith continues. I am so glad to be female in AMERICA. These female reporters need to wake up and stop going to the Middle East. There are plenty of things to report on in the rest of the world with much less danger involved. Now they have to not only worry about the emotional scarring to themselves and their families, but also the sexually transmitted diseases they probably contracted from these worse than animals who assaulted them.

  • Chris - 2011-11-26 02:10

When will the PC Idiots learn you shouldn't send women into Muslim war zones?

  • Jim - 2011-11-26 02:37

According to Whoopie, it wasn't realy rape/rape, it was just rape.....

  • David - 2011-11-26 03:05

And where is the US National Organization of Women (NOW)...crickets.... These professionals should be protected by the Orgs who allowed/sent them into this 7th Century nightmare. Whatever number of armed, trained Security it would take. Duh.

      Michael - 2011-11-26 05:21

David, liberals don't allow you to carry guns, or in England even weapons to defend yourself.( Unless you are a security guard for some rich liberal in Manhattan, washington or Hollywood)

  • forresta65 - 2011-11-26 03:35

What do you expect from a bunch of savages? Where is NOW. Oh, thats right, their not christians so they can do whatever they want to women, it's ok! What do you expect from a group of people that believe, in heaven, if you kill enough people you can enslave 72 women?

WHAT THE TALMUD SAYS ABOUT JESUS & MARY? Where a Jew Should Do Evil Moed Kattan 17a: If a Jew is tempted to do evil he should go to a city where he is not known and do the evil there. Penalty for Disobeying Rabbis Erubin 21b. Whosoever disobeys the rabbis deserves death and will be punished by being boiled in hot excrement in hell. Hitting a Jew is the same as hitting God Sanhedrin 58b. If a heathen (gentile) hits a Jew, the gentile must be killed. O.K. to Cheat Non-Jews Sanhedrin 57a . A Jew need not pay a gentile ("Cuthean") the wages owed him for work. Jews Have Superior Legal Status Baba Kamma 37b. "If an ox of an Israelite gores an ox of a Canaanite there is no liability; but if an ox of a Canaanite gores an ox of an Israelite...the payment is to be in full." Jews May Steal from Non-Jews Baba Mezia 24a . If a Jew finds an object lost by a gentile ("heathen") it does not have to be returned. (Affirmed also in Baba Kamma 113b). Sanhedrin 76a. God will not spare a Jew who "marries his daughter to an old man or takes a wife for his infant son or returns a lost article to a Cuthean..." Jews May Rob and Kill Non-Jews Sanhedrin 57a . When a Jew murders a gentile ("Cuthean"), there will be no death penalty. What a Jew steals from a gentile he may keep. Baba Kamma 37b. The gentiles are outside the protection of the law and God has "exposed their money to Israel."

Hey drmazazi, Should I label this WHAT NAZI/CHRISTIANS SAY ABOUT JEWS? It would really get a fight going. The above is standard Nazi propaganda, found at many Jew hating sites. Sometimes the writers make things up, other times lines are taken out of context, cherry-picked. The website angelfire dot com slash mt slash talmud explains or refutes the above comments.

    This didn't happen with mabarak.

Islam .. anti-women religion strikes again .. and again .. yet lets all pretend Islam respects women because that is what MSM tells us to believe. We wouldnt want Islam leaders to ever question whether they should reform themselves. The UN estimates there are over 5000 Muslim women murdered each year by their family in honor killings for expressing themselves in independent ways (daring to date a non-Muslim, for example) that women from western society take for granted. A good number of these victims were raped and were then murdered by their own family.
