Boko Haram tells Christians to leave

2012-01-02 23:05

Abuja - Radical Islamist group Boko Haram issued an ultimatum on Monday, telling southern Christians living in the north to leave within three days or face further violence.

Aminu Magada, a source close to the sect, told dpa that Boko Haram spokesperson Abu Qaga issued an e-mail statement to some media institutions.

The statement said southern Christians living in the north, particularly those in the states of Borno and Yobe, should leave immediately.

It comes after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in four northern states, where violence between ethnic groups has also flared in recent days.

Southerners account for more than 30% of the 18 million Nigerians living in the north of the country.

Many of them work in the commercial and retail sectors.

Although most Nigerian Christians come from southern states, many of those who moved to the north have since had families who converted to Islam.

In the last two weeks more than 90 000 people are believed to have fled the north after increased attacks by Boko Haram on the region.

The group claimed responsibility for co-ordinated bomb blasts at churches on Christmas Day that killed at least 30 people, and for the August bombing of the UN headquarters in Abuja, killing 25 people.

Jonathan is in the process of setting up an anti-terrorism unit, but his efforts to quash the sect have come under fire from commentators, many of whom fear that an attempt to divide the country along geographical and religious lines could spark civil unrest like that seen during the 1967-70 civil war.

The government has yet to react to Monday's ultimatum.

Religion do not deserve respect, look at the above story.

Atheitis, why are you so obsessed with these 'fairy tales"? Seems that you are living Hell on earth already. Geez pal, imagine the real thing. You are due a Damascan experience to counter-balance being dropped on your nut as a baby.

      Fredster - 2012-01-03 09:36

Atheitis: I agree..but it goes to show that atheism is nothing, and no credit is due there. Thanks for clearing that for us

      emile.eley - 2012-01-03 11:35

You murder intelligence on a daily basis. By the way, your constant contributions are superflous to requirements. You buddies with Tom cruise or what?

      BA - 2012-01-03 12:02

At Atheitis. You are right that a war has not been committed in the name of atheism. But let me just remind you also that many conflicts are not necessarily carried out in the name of a religion. The Armenians's genocide by the Turks was not. Some are arguably, but not strictly speaking, not religious in nature, like the Turks genocide against the Kurds. The Holocaust by the nazis was not a relgious war per se. It was not done in the name of Christianity. Yes, the Jews were the victims, but it wasn't a Crusade. World War I was also not a religious war. Neither was the Rwandan genocide. Neither was Stalin's genocide of Russian citizens.. So some major deaths have not been done in the name of relgion.

  • omon.arewe - 2012-01-03 01:00

This is a welcome development. The Northerners in the southern part should leave the south as quickly as possible. This makes the division of the country easy. No fighting and no blood shedding on the battle field.I do not even know what the southerns are still doing in the North. No Northern should have access to the Nigerian port in the south.Cut off the pipeline from the delta area to Kaduna refinery immediately.God gave us this statement as blessing in the your 2012.

5.4million people moving in three days will be quite a sight .

  • olanrewaju.fayemi - 2012-01-03 01:54

My fellow children of God, the time has come 4us to move the hands that move the world. Lets call on our Father that rules in the affairs of men. Let's remember what happened to Shennacherib the emperor of Assyria and his soldiers when king Hezekiah filed a complaint against him in the court of the captain of our battle(JEHO-VAH NISSI). The bible says 'That night AN ANGEL(just a single one) of the LORD went to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 soldiers. At dawn the next day, there they lay all dead (2kgs 19:35). Have we forgotten so soon the reigh of a tyrant military dictatorship(I dont want to mention name)sometimes ago? We prayed, and God heard our collective cry like that of the isrealites in Egypt and he was deleted from the seat of power in Abuja. Let's wake up and pray. We should not forget that the weapons of our warfare are not CANAL(or physical) but mighty thru God to the pulling down of strongholds. So LET'S PRAY AND PRAY AND PRAY AGAIN. GOD LL DELETE THEM.

      Van - 2012-01-03 07:17

Atheitis: Seems that you have serious issues in your life. You should go and ask someone to help you. Why do you know so much about something that, in your humble opinion, does not exist? Why waste your time on something that, in your humble opinion, does not exist?

  • nabil.abdool - 2012-01-03 02:39

These 'creatures' must be brought to justice! How dare they call themselves Muslims!?

      emile.eley - 2012-01-03 07:29

What do you suggest they call themselves? It is insightful that a group like this flourishes and is not renounced by the community which gives them shelter.

religeon, biggest cause of the majority of conflicts world wide

      Jaba - 2012-01-03 10:15

maybe... but There is no place in the world, that discrimination and racism is as institutionalized as in the Arab world, against Christians, Jews, Hindu's, Buddhists, women, gays and other smaller minorities. There is hardly a conflict in the world that doesn't have Muslims involved. Afghanistan, Bosnia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cyprus, East Timor, Indonesia, Gaza, Kashmir, Kosovo, Kurdistan, Macedonia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Chechnya, Serbia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Algeria, Yemen, etc. All of these recent or ongoing conflicts have involved the "Religion of Peace", Islam.

  • Obakeng Molobi - 2012-01-03 06:46

I'm convinced; this is planet hell! Some people think they have God (or whoever they pray 2) given rights to decide whats right/wrong for others and how others should live their lives. These double standards are sickening. No amount of logic or intelligence can justify killing another person because (s)he doesn't want to pray 2 your God. What makes you think your God, skin colour or beliefs are better than the next person's? Why fight/kill people who are not fighting/bothering you? What happened to respect for human life? On a lighter, yet serious note: these people must find a way of working their differences out, because I can't handle having 1 more Pastor Chris coming 2 our shores! There are too many Nigerians churches here in SA!!! Jeeez! These churches are growing faster than BlackBerry's market share.

  • Burtfred - 2012-01-03 07:08

How to start a civil war - have half your population Muslim.

      Jaba - 2012-01-03 10:17

the EU have no idea what is coming their way

  • - 2012-01-03 07:11

The opening statement of this article says enough. "Radical Islamist Group..." That doesnt mean that they are real muslims. People should stop confusing the acts of these idiots with what the Islamic faith really teaches.

      keith.staniford - 2012-01-03 07:31

If this is the case, then WHY does the non radical islamic faith not CONDEMN these acts of terrorism?

      emile.eley - 2012-01-03 07:32

Then start proving them wrong man! The answer is quite simple: if it has no limbs, slithers on the ground, is cold-blooded, has forked tongue and scales, what is it, a dog?

      Gerhard - 2012-01-03 10:41

Mohammed teaches that it is ok to have sex with a 9 year old. Makes me vomit.

  • keith.staniford - 2012-01-03 08:23

I see that Atheitis is still awake. Busy deleting comments that do not agree with his sick mentality.

  • pinehas.m.amadhila - 2012-01-03 08:30

Boko Haram should not terrorize its fellow countrymen (Christian) to leave north of Nigeria. If they so wish to harm Christians in the north we (Christians)shall also take revenge, guard against this.

      Ylla - 2012-01-03 09:26

Then if you take revenge you do not follow the same Jesus Christ that I do. Christ taught tolerance, and to "turn the other cheek". "Revenge is mine." says the Lord God Almighty. Revenge is the outpouring of hatred and anger, the opposite of true Christianity. Hypocrisy was also present during Christ's time and He brought correction to the hypocrites of the day.

  • keith.staniford - 2012-01-03 08:42

@ Atheitis. I see that more steam comes from you than the engine you claim to drive. Do you sit up all night concocting the garbage that you post on News 24? does it feed you self inflated ego? suggest you get a good nights sleep and then perhaps you can contribute some intelligent, constructive comment instead of the non ending drivel that emanates from your backside. Sweet dreams!

      Mike - 2012-01-03 10:46

For a believer you do very well with tolerance. Is this how you conduct yourself in your faith?

  • keith.staniford - 2012-01-03 08:48

@Atheitis Why do I have to read newspapers and watch the News when I have a self confessed expert like you to refer to, after all you give the impression that you know it all!

  • Ylla - 2012-01-03 09:12

Religion is not the same as faith in the Living God and Jesus Christ. So, yes religion can be the catalyst of violence, but true Christian faith in Jesus Christ is one of tolerance, love and respect for all mankind. Jesus in His time, interacted and ministered with love to the worst criminals, diseased outcasts, prostitutes and the despised of society. Judgement is reserved for God Almighty alone, these people who claim to be Christians and kill and commit atrocities in His Name, are stupid and have carelessly misinterpreted the Bible. Even the Devil knows the Bible and uses the misinterpretation of it to convince people to commit atrocities by letting them believe it is "in the Name of God". I am a Christian, and have friends who are Moslem, atheist, agnostic, Hindi and Pagan. I do not judge them, but walk in love towards them and pray for their salvation without "bible bashing" them. We have healthy philosophical debate and are all accepting of each others different belief systems. My life as a Christian should be a living example of God's love for mankind.

      emile.eley - 2012-01-03 11:47

And your stupidity? Priceless! Now go polish daddy's horns.

  • Jaba - 2012-01-03 10:04

      Gerhard - 2012-01-03 12:20

      Islam is a fascist religion

      Riaad - 2012-01-03 22:46

George W Bush read the Bible every morning in the White House while he was sending US troops to kill innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan. You people will only see the light about the Truth of Islam when your eyes close one day - and see the Hellfire for your hypocrisy and blasphemy.
