Botswana breaks ranks over Gaddafi

2011-07-06 22:07

Gaborone - Botswana said on Wednesday it supports an International Criminal Court arrest warrant issued for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, despite the African Union summit's refusal to execute it.

"Botswana wishes to reiterate her position in support of the warrant of arrest. This decision was not reached lightly," said a foreign ministry statement.

"State-sponsored violence and blatant human rights violations by the Gaddafi regime on its own people, which started in February this year, continues unabated to this day," it said.

"This is despite international efforts calling on the regime to end its violent campaign against the Libyan people."

The AU summit in Equatorial Guinea said the ICC warrant hampered efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict between Gaddafi's forces and Libyan rebels, and that AU members "shall not co-operate in the execution of the arrest warrant".

Diamond-rich Botswana condemned Gaddafi when violence broke out in Libya and immediately cut its diplomatic ties.

Botswana has also made clear that it will arrest Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir, also the target of an ICC war crimes warrant, if he sets foot in Botswana.

In the run-up to the signing of Zimbabwe's political agreement, Botswana's President Ian Khama was the only regional leader who openly condemned President Robert Mugabe's violent cling to power after failed elections in 2008.

      mario88 - 2011-07-07 00:59

      Skirmisherp - 2011-07-07 05:50

you must be crazy,go soothe yourself lazy african and warmonger or your are hatemonger whatever!!!we will strive for democracy and for the peace in this world,we will be beside the USA in our fight for freedom.come to Botswana and see how beautiful democracy is and free we live,we don't live under dictators and Killers!!!

      Wow! - 2011-07-07 06:13

You, Sibs are the idiot. President Khama has integrity and believes in what is right. You and - I assume your ANC - colleagues do not even understand the concept of integrity. It was appropriate to rely on people with integrity to support the ANC government before they came into power BUT now? – it is a case of ‘to hell with the people in Zimbabwe and Libya who aspire to democracy’ as far as your ilk is concerned.

  • jock - 2011-07-06 22:52

Botswana has stood on it's own, against the rest of Africa, many a time. It's actually pleasant to see a country that has ethics & morals. Compared to the rest of Africa who are out just to see who can outdo the other (so who is more corrupt, unethical, immoral & has no integrity)

      Strategist - 2011-07-07 08:11

My friend, Botswana is not standing on it's own, It is controlled by Britain. That's why they have that military base in Botswana. Dig a bit deeper and you will find out how Britain has full control of Botswana.

      GTA_Lad - 2011-07-07 08:17

I wish Britain had ful control of SA, we wouldn't be 3 years behind everyone else. Say what you like about Poms, they know how to run a country and their citizens generally have a very good standard of living

      Zambezi - 2011-07-08 15:00

@Stratagist.... best you dig a bit deeper. The Poms have nothing to do with that military base (i asume you know the name). It has a few uses... 1) For the Botswana Defence Force Air Wing.. 2) Emergency Shuttle Landing Strip in Southern Africa.. 3) Used by Armies that deploy for peacekeeping operations. Make no mistake Mr. Stratigist... Botswana is controlled by Britain to the same degree that South Africa is controlled by Alians..... I suggest you do your own investigations, and if you have proof, show it. Seems to me, you are just very jealous of the success that Botswana is.

  • Strategist - 2011-07-07 08:08

I'm not surprised by this western puppet president of Botswana. He is the biggetst western stoogie in Southern Africa. How on earth do support colonialists and plunders. Is Khama too foolish to see that all what is happening in Libya is a western plot. For your own info, Botswana is occupied by the British. Botswana is controlled by the British. Very rich country in minerals, but it's people are also very poor. Why?, because all diamonds are exported to the queen of England. That's why Khama is talking this rubbish in our African soil. He was told by Britain that aid to his country will cut. Wake up Africans, unite and fight the west imperialism and recolonialism.

      GTA_Lad - 2011-07-07 08:21

How on earth do you support racist dictators? Africa can't do a damn thing for itself, you've seen it time and time again, give me an example to the contrary if you can

      daaivark - 2011-07-07 08:22

Strategist, Ja Ja it's the damned nato-zionist-alignment again. Man, that's a tenacious bunch. One finds them everywhere you write. Your grasp of Southern African history is eccentric, to say the least, and your grasp of reality rather tenuous. Oh dear, you're going to have to fetch a dictionary to get all that.

      Mad Hatter - 2011-07-07 08:25

Man didn't land on the moon , micheal jackson was really white ,JFK was a Nazi and Oprah is an alien .

      De la Rey - 2011-07-07 11:52

@ Strategist:I think you forgot that black people voted for president Khama and will again as he is a good and a fair leader who care and provide for his people. You will eat your words soon when you will be hungry in SA and have nowhere to run. There is no colonised country south to run to, once SA went down the drain(because of useless, uninformed racists like you). Do not advertise your stupidity on the internet!!

      Zambezi - 2011-07-08 15:08

Stratagist..... Me thinks you is a Zimbo (probably born in Rhodesia - if you say you is a war vet), me thinks you are just peddling Mugabe's utter crap, as usual!!! Shut-up and go live in Zimbabwe if you not a Zimbo, that is a country that is totally not Western. It's as backward as your drivel.

  • Rastus - 2011-07-07 08:13

Well done Botswana - the rest of the begging bowls of Africa, can learn a lot from you guys! No 1 - The Death Penalty! Good start - the rest just flows - controls on crime - no hands in front crying for aid!

  • tshwanecc - 2011-07-07 08:44

Botswana seems to be the only state with a sane president in Africa.

  • Cabindiano - 2011-07-07 09:09

Show your leadership skills Botswana. Stand up and speak up for human life decency and dignity. Develop a refresher class for “Ethics & Morality” and refresh these assassins and barbaric presidents of this continent. Tell them that value and dignity to human life is above and well beyond to executive posts. Arrest these tugs if they step foot to your country and hand them to the Hague. Look to what is happen in Zimbabwe, Somali, DRC, Sudan, etc. The hooligans of our presidents are always siding with these murderous leaders of such countries. Please take the lead and let’s your voice be heard across the cradle of humanity land.

  • Nic - 2011-07-07 14:09

What do you expects from a British descendant? I don't know why he is clinging to AU if he does not respect its resolution? EU is there, why don't he go and join it? Forget it, Britain conrtolling SA? Mugabe said Zimbabwe will never be a colony again, never.

      zebracobra - 2011-07-07 18:45

Nic,It shows cross marriage good for blacks, inteligent oofsprings not like Malema stupid.

  • Nic - 2011-07-07 14:16

Quote "Mr President, I spent 11 precious years of life in a jail of a white Englishman, whose freedom I assured and protected since our independence. He farms freely, associate freely under our black Government. He has a farm of well over 500 hactares, and that was Ian Smith. I spent further 15 years fighting white unjustice in my country. Mr Smith is resposible for the death of well over 50,000 of my people. He would have faced a different faith here or in Europe if the 50K he killed had been Europeans - do your math - and now you think the European are saints, whilst they shed blood everyday? I guess you are all puppet of the West.
