Call for global ban on attacks

2012-09-16 09:48

Cairo - Egypt's top Muslim cleric on Saturday called for an international ban on all forms of attacks against Islam, after a provocative film sparked violent protests in the Middle East and North Africa.

Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, grand imam of Cairo's Al-Azhar, the highest seat of Sunni Muslim learning, underlined "the need for an international resolution (banning) any attack on Muslim religious symbols," in a statement addressed to UN leader Ban Ki-moon and published by official news agency MENA.

The resolution should "criminalise attacks on Islamic symbols and on those of other religions, after the violence against those who provoked challenges to world peace and international security," said Tayyeb.

A low-budget film produced in the United States, "Innocence of Muslims," incited a wave of bloody anti-American violence in Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Yemen and in several other countries.

The imam said it was the UN's responsibility to "protect world peace from any threat or aggression," so that "these dangerous events cannot recur."

He also called on "Egyptians in these trying times (to show) wisdom and restraint," condemning the targeting of innocent people and underlining the need to protect foreign diplomatic missions.

Tens of thousands of people across the Islamic world on Friday staged anti-American protests against the film, which portrays Muslims as immoral and gratuitously violent.

The Movie was just plain stupid. The reaction of the world's Muslim community was also just plain stupid. Islam needs to take a hard look in the mirror... because their childish response to a pathetic film just shows their insecurity... I have one question though… On youtube are hundreds of anti-Christian and anti-Jewish films that have plagued the screens of the Arab world… you don’t see Christians and Jews running in mobs destroying buildings and killing people… When the Muslims destroyed huge sculptures of Buddha in Afghanistan you didn’t see Buddhists go on a killing rampage… neither do you see Hindus going crazy when Muslims destroy a place of worship in India or when India is hit with Pakistani terror. The religion of peace needs to learn some peace.

a worldwide ban would impinge on freedom of speech. We all have a right to an opinion and the right to voice that opinion, even if it is a warped opinion

      gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-09-16 11:25

We don't take orders from a muslim cleric curtailing our inalienable right to freedom of expression in our own countries.

      william.letsong.5 - 2012-09-16 11:48

Well than I guess singing \kill the boer, kill the farmer is okay to sing? Stop being hypocrites. If you and Christians are okay with the way Americans are mocking your God, than please do not except Muslim to accept America's insults on their religion. It is just wrong and if you are okay with what the Americans are doing, and you call it freedom of speech, than I suggest that you stop criticising Malema and Zuma over their song choices.

      gieljam.gomtor - 2012-09-16 11:49

Agree his call is typical of what these Hypocrites have doing and getting away with. Why has he not come out with some condemnation when Christians and churches where attacked in the bloodiest way thinkable .I think this film actually woke them out of their slumber to something they are in denial with.

      patrick.mettle.7 - 2012-09-16 12:10

@william letsong. Singing kill the boer song is very different from making a movie based on someone's opinion or one fact. If mohammed did marry a 6 year old and made her pregnant by 9, and your movie adds some opinion that he was a paedophile - you are not inciting people to kill anyone. You have made a movie that most people would not watch. We don't really CARE!! But when u have a political leader inciting murder, that is a problem. When u have a religion that promotes murder and intolerance - that is a problem. Do u understand the difference now? Ssabmud

      stanton.clarke - 2012-09-16 12:15

      Well said Jaba.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-16 17:01

William, America didn't mock Islam. One person did. It is immature to extrapolate the views of one person to a whole country of 350 million people, and it's government. The world is heading towards more freedom not less, whether you like it or not.

  • LanfearM - 2012-09-16 10:31

Just one response to this ridiculous call and that is f*ck you. There is nothing "holy" about religion that makes them sacrosanct. Just who the hell do these guys think they are?! Why are Muslims so insecure in their faith that they need to burn and destroy and kill when they are insulted? As jaba.kov said, there are hundreds of films that are anti-christian and anti-judaism, yet you don't see the Jews and the Christians running around bombing embassies, burning qur'ans and killing innocents! Islam must wake up to the real world! We are not living in the middle ages anymore. Religious freedom is a basic right for all humans. Are Islam so frightened of losing a few worshippers that they give the death penalty for "apostacy"?

      morgaenart.farto - 2012-09-16 11:13

Their actions make perfect sense for anyone stuck in the 7th Century.

      Madhi - 2012-09-16 11:41

If u are democratic u need to allow muslims to choose their way of life and not impose ur values on them, they will reject them and reject u at the same time.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-16 17:10

That's hypocritical Madhi. You're promoting democracy but not practicing it yourself. You can't have it both ways. That doesn't make sense. You're either in favour of democracy, which includes freedom of expression and fundamental human rights, or you're not.

      LanfearM - 2012-09-17 09:34

@ Madhi - we DO allow Muslims to practice their own way of life. It is the Muslims that don't want anyone else to practice *their* way of life in peace. And you don't allow me to practice MY way of life in Islamic countries. Perhaps you Muslims should really have a good, long look at how hypocritical you are.

  • mnmwale - 2012-09-16 11:05

Every freedom-loving civilized person must say \no\ to this call. Religion must be subjected to scrutiny just like any other belief, culture os practise. Religion is run by people and can influence culture and practices either good or bad. So why should it not be scrutinized or ridiculed?

  • Madhi - 2012-09-16 11:38

It should be common sense not to insult others under freedom of speech. What non muslims dont understand is that muslims would choose their religion over democracy if democracy means pissing on islamic symbols. As much as the west criminalise holocaust denial and racism, muslims criminalise religious bigotry that targets islamic symbols. So the choice is very clear, either people learn to accept differences and not insult others or there will be a violent push back, nothing in between. Muslims are not interested in killing others for their faith and this has been like this for more than a 1000 years, but christians have always picked up a fight with muslims and islamic symbols to an extent that a Norwegian moron killed his own people because they were tolerant to muslims. So to your faith and us to our faith, simple.

      patrick.mettle.7 - 2012-09-16 11:46

What you don't get and the rest of the non muslims are, is that muslims always choose their own religion above any other law. So you have democratic countries being taken over by this backward religion because the laws allow muslims to practise their faith but once they are in power, all others must obey. So let's keep up this protest against Islam until they learn to respect out laws. If my country allows me to have freedom of speech and I want to piss on christianity or islam, I will take my chances with the afterlife. Muslims do not have a right to threaten me or kill non believers. So fouk them until they stop destroying other religions symbols and believers. It is a war man. Get it in to ur head. Its a slow paced advance, using laws they don't believe in to replace them with stone age laws. Check out Belgium and sone african countries. They are like locusts and have to be stopped.

      phae.rayden - 2012-09-16 12:47

It should be common sense to understand your religion is just a collection ancient ideas. Religions are fast dying out as science advances, yours is one of the last as it is ruled with terror and rigid control. Very few have realised nothing can happen if you deny an imaginary being. Slowly but surely you will be released from the chains of religious oppression as you are exposed to freedom of thought and expression.

      beertjie.peertjie - 2012-09-16 13:50

Who has ever denied you your faith? I thought God was almighty? There's also a difference between the Germans criminalising holocaust denial and fools that claim to believe in an almighty god but behaves as if their almighty god is incapable of dealing with those that deny him or insult him. It's all about you feeling that you've been insulted and then talking crap about your prophet being insulted. I have never felt the need to violently deal with those that insult my religion because god can deal with them if it wants to, being almighty and all. You, are a bloody moron. Now that is an insult. And shove your faith.

      Madhi - 2012-09-16 17:13

Patrick, in SA muslims don't have separate laws and they are happy with other people as neighbours. So just grow a pair and be a man of substance not hot air. U see war against muslims who don't have a problem with u as long as u live them in peace. Hey, remember peace is worth going to war for, so if u want war go to Afghanistan u will get one for free, otherwise shut the f..up.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-16 17:16

"So the choice is very clear, either people learn to accept differences and not insult others or there will be a violent push back, nothing in between." You've admitted your own immaturity and barbarism, Madhi. You are way behind the freer, more civilized world. Regarding freedom with responsibility relating to freedom of speech, our South African constitution has hate speech provisions. That's all that's needed provided they are implemented properly.

  • Frank Hublot Einstein - 2012-09-16 11:40

And how does he propose the UN does that. How can the UN. The UN is not going to regulate the action of every single individual. And 'insulting' of religious symbols is not a crime in some countries.

  • michael.i.wright - 2012-09-16 11:52

So, now they want the UN to enforce their policy that all must bow before them or die? Where is Vlad Tepes when you need him?

  • long.tom.509 - 2012-09-16 11:55

What is wrong with Islam? violence seems to be part of there religion, the Iman should also in the same breath ask his followers to stop all of there attacks and violence towards innocent people, they really are a weird people

  • dariusedwin - 2012-09-16 11:57

musilms alwayz wana fyt for every issue. Budda and Christ are mocked everyday but where hav u had people storming in the street killing innocent individuals

  • shahied.mohamed.9 - 2012-09-16 12:09

    Yes...Yes...Yes...Protect all religions NOW !!!

      phae.rayden - 2012-09-16 12:58

Really? All of them, think for a moment what that would entail.... Vodoo vs Scientology vs Rastafarian vs Islam vs Chritianity vs Mormons vs Shamanism vs Judism Vs Ancestoral worship, etc and all the others inbetween who will start their own sects for protection. Bad bad idea just keep your own crazy brand of illusion tucked up in your home where is can't inflict damage and madness on others.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-16 17:20

      From what?

  • BatongaBoro - 2012-09-16 12:14

no one has the right never to be offended. if something is offensive, simply ignore it.

  • bbooyse - 2012-09-16 12:15

As long as that means you'll allow Churches to be build in the middle east, repeal the blasphemy and apostasy laws (which is misused on christian and other religious minorities) and protect people's religious liberty.

  • phae.rayden - 2012-09-16 12:25

Muslims need to understand their religious belief systems hold absolutely no power over other peoples lives. We have no respect for you when you use violence and intimidation to entrench your outdated understanding of existence. If you want to be a functional part of the world, you need to learn about freedom of expression.

      shireen.abbas - 2012-09-16 14:03
