Yaounde - Cameroon's military says it attacked Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamic extremists in a Nigerian village, killing several of the militants and destroying some of their equipment.

Colonel Jacob Kodji said on Monday that Cameroonian forces entered Nigeria last week after residents of Ndaba in Borno state said the militants were planning to attack the village.

Kodji said Cameroonian forces killed several militants near Ndaba, about 20km from the border with Cameroon, on Thursday and Friday. Cameroonian troops also destroyed some of the militants' vehicles and ammunition.

Boko Haram, which is based in northern Nigeria, has been waging a six-year insurgency to create an Islamic state. In response to increasing attacks in Nigeria and neighbouring countries, Cameroon, Chad and others have banded together to fight the militants.
