Christians being 'driven' out of Libya

2013-02-01 22:02

Vatican City - Christians are being driven out of eastern Libya by Muslim fundamentalists, the Catholic Church's main clergyman in the country told the Vatican missionary news agency Fides.

The situation was "critical" and the "atmosphere very tense" in the Cyrenaica region, the Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli said in the interview on Thursday.

He said two religious communities are leaving "after being pressured by fundamentalists", adding that the Apostolic Vicar of Benghazi was cautioned to take shelter ahead of a large-scale demonstration on 20 February.

"In past days, the Congregation of the Holy Family of Spoleto who had been there for nearly 100 years were forced to abandon Derna," east of the main eastern city of Benghazi, he said.

"In Barce [located between Benghazi and Derna] the Franciscan Sisters of the Child Jesus will leave their home in coming days."

On Friday, Martinelli told Vatican Radio that for some time now fundamentalism has governed decisions in Libya.

Christians have voiced fear of a rise in sectarian sentiment in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation following the 2011 revolt that toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi and in which hard-line Islamists played a major part.

Before the uprising, 3% of Libya's population of around 6.3 million were Christian.

Now only a couple thousand of them remain, with the majority of them expatriates.

In December, two Egyptians died in a blast at a Christian Coptic church in the Libyan town of Dafniya, and two others were wounded.

@mattwerk - Those people did not do it in the name of their atheism as the religiots are doing it in the name of their religions. Can't get the difference?

      gary.landman - 2013-02-02 20:12

Come on Atheitis...so now every statement from Hitler is now Gospel? You cannot be a loathesom mass murderer, meglomaniac and crazy person and a speaker of profound truth which can be used to back up argument at the same time can you? pick a side pal!

      derek.francois.3 - 2013-02-03 06:40

Gary Atheitas is just another human searching for the truth, blaming mere mans sins of the past, hoping science will provide and answer or even better hoping the someone can provide evidence of a miracle that God exists! no I fear that Atheitas will never find peace.................

US killed Iraqis and its not "Western/Christian" fanatics, but if some Muslims kills Westerners its suddenly "Islamic problem" ... How bizarre!

      jody.beggs - 2013-02-02 10:37

Every religion has its fanatics , that's what religion creates belief based on myths and faerie tales. To those of faith the fanaticism is what proves the power of god. Its crazy when man doing god's work is seen as god's work. What does god actually do , if not just watch ... You people...

Here is a list of moderate muslims:

      nicholas.hall.31945 - 2013-02-02 12:04

Good point. The cause of Christianity has been harmed by politicians invading another country in the name of Jesus. Jesus, however never endorsed this behavior, His gospel is one of peace and love. Question, does the teachings of Mohammed promote or condemn the taking of another human life? I ask this because I never see acts of violence carried out by Islamic fundamentalists being condemned by the Islamic community or leadership.

      nicholas.hall.31945 - 2013-02-02 20:17

Arthritis I cannot speak for Islam as I am not Muslim but my understanding is that Islam means surrender and is a derivative of the Arabic work Salam which means peace. Both words do not conjure up the image of war and slaughter. You are correct that the old testiment I about law and justice but the new testament is about mercy and grace. It sounds to me that you have studied the bible sufficiently to know that Jesus spoke about forgiveness, turning the other cheek and not rendering evil for evil.

      nervern - 2013-02-11 13:27

You hear the americans screaming allah o agbar? U guys do it in the name of allah...!

  • charmaine.mcdonald2 - 2013-02-02 00:29

There is only One God and Jesus Christ is the soon coming King, The Holy Quran states this and this is not what Islam teaches. Not all muslims are the same, some are for war and others are for peace. We should all, as believers, pray for these demoniac human beings to draw closer to God.

      heibrin.venter - 2013-02-02 01:59

@charmaine: then why do all Muslims celebrate those perceived victories against the western world? Why do Muslims violently protest when someone satires their religion, instead of the peaceful (tolerant?) demonstrations that you imply some are for?

      Venessa Born Stubborn Ede - 2013-02-02 05:02

The Quran DOES NOT recognise Jesus as the son of God! He is merely recognised as a prophet of God! Typical Christian twisting the facts to suit their MO! I know you are talking hogwash and I'm not even a follower of either religion!

      gert.swart.393 - 2013-02-02 11:26

The chrsitians are so f.ing afraid of the islams, they are ready to capitulate immediately!

  • Russophillia - 2013-02-02 01:18

The religion of sissies. Christians absolutely love being persecuted, it reminds them of Jesus. Have some balls for pete's sake, there's 2.5 billion of you versus 1.2 billion of them.

      heibrin.venter - 2013-02-02 02:05

@Russophillia: firstly, Catholics aren't Christians, there are a lot less of the latter, and many more of the first. Secondly, both Catholicism and Christianity advocate a non-violent approach in dealing with other religions, unlike Islam, which preaches violence as a viable option.

      Derick.kleyn - 2013-02-02 06:57

wow so catholics created christianity and wrote the bible, old and new testament....thats amazing how wise u are oh great 1,have u contacted the press about this?surely history has 2 b rewritten now that by ur opinion roman historical transcripts speaking of jesus being crucified is false!every historian in this world 2day who are mostly atheists,(well known or not)by historical fact cannot deny that jesus existed.u should really go public with this, maybe u could even win the nobel prize for being the most ignorant atheist to ever walk the face of the earth!lol the ''catholics created christianity and wrote the book of myths'',constantine created the catholic church!because of christian uprising in rome!it was the fear of the roman empire being destroyed by the ''christians'' that lead to catholism!so to put it to you simply and again i will say 2 u it is historical fact that jesus existed, christians existed, also that the old and new testament also was in existance before the catholic church was created.get ur facts straight!

      Derick.kleyn - 2013-02-02 07:30

      hahahahahahahahahaha good comeback!

      heibrin.venter - 2013-02-03 07:40

@Atheitis: Easier attacking the man than trying to refute the statement? Broken into paragraphs (and slightly condensed!): there were these guys called Romans, they persecuted some other guys, let's call them Christians, just for argument's sake. (Another paragraph, just for you!)Now, being the clever little politician that he was Emperor Constantine (a Roman) realized that he was never going to be able to put the Christians uprising down (we're a tenacious bunch, us Christians!) so instead, he came to a universal truth: "If you can't beat them, join them!" which he subsequently did. However, he was the Emperor of Rome, and thus needed to retain the power, resulting in him creating the Catholic church, by making Christianity the state religion, and thus bringing politics to religion - something the Catholic church still influences today. Most if not all of the Bible were written well before Christ came, the exceptions being the New Testament, and that was written well before the Catholic church sprang into being. No-one would deny that they were the dominant 'Christian' religion through-out the ages, however with the advent of Protestant Christianity in the early 1500's a very big part of Catholics returned to 'pure' Christianity -- things like God being the highest authority on earth, in stead of the pope, etc. So, do you understand now what Derick was telling you, or do you need pictures? :-)

@Atheitis, religion is just used as a front to get people into wars, the real "men" behind wars use religion to benefit them for more power/money. Believe it or not even in Iran must "Muslims" are silent atheists. Please excuse any spelling/grammer errors, just woke up.

  • piet.boerie - 2013-02-02 02:34

      piet.boerie - 2013-02-02 02:38

The Taliban had a BBQ with the Bush family on the their Texas ranch in the 90's. That is the honest truth, see The Economist magazine. We promote these wars to make money out of the country while it is on its knees. Nato supplied weapons to these religous fundamentalists. Anyway fact is the US have killed more civilians in the last 20 years than all these terrorsits put together under the guise of Demcocracy.

We should thank the Nato terrorists for bringing anarchy and instability into a stable, prosperous and progressive country. It's not only Christians that are being chased out of Libya but this started last year already when the Nato sponsored beards starting lynching and expelling black Libyans and Tauregs, who have made their way to Mali. These Nato terrorist scumbags should stay out of other countries, they only bring death and destruction. The incontinent impatience of the democracy fanatics has lead to meddling in a sovereign country with terrible consequences!

"Ghadafi was the one who brought about his own downfall by sponsoring terrorists in other people's countries and oppressing his own people," How is the Nato terrorists meddling in Libyan affairs, "minding" their own business? Libya had nothing to do with Lockerbie! http://www.news24.com/World/News/US-paid-Lockerbie-witness-2m-20091003 Abdelbaset al-Megrahi never wavered in his denial of causing the Lockerbie disaster: Scottish legal experts say they believe him. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2007/jun/17/politics.lockerbie1 Dr Hans Köchler, one of the UN observers at the trial, expressed serious doubts about the fairness of the proceedings and spoke of a "spectacular miscarriage of justice" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/1872996.stm His lawyers claim that vital documents, which emanate from the CIA and relate to the Mebo timer that allegedly detonated the Lockerbie bomb, were withheld from the trial defence team. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7023397.stm Tony Gauci, chief prosecution witness at the trial, is alleged to have been paid $2 million for testifying against Megrahi. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2007/oct/03/lockerbie.scotland Mebo's owner, Edwin Bollier, has claimed that in 1991 the FBI offered him $4 million to testify that the timer fragment found near the scene of the crash was part of a Mebo MST-13 timer supplied to Libya. http://i-p-o.org/IPO-nr-Lockerbie-5Oct07.htm

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-02-02 13:22

Former employee of Mebo, Ulrich Lumpert, swore an affidavit in July 2007 that he had stolen a prototype MST-13 timer in 1989, and had handed it over to "a person officially investigating the Lockerbie case" http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2007/sep/02/theairlineindustry.libya On November 1, 2007 Megrahi invited Robert Black to visit him at Her Majesty's Prison, Greenock. After a 2-hour meeting, Black stated "that not only was there a wrongful conviction, but the victim of it was an innocent man. Lawyers, and I hope others, will appreciate this distinction" http://lockerbiecase.blogspot.com/2007/11/prison-visit.html Is that simple enough for your addled brains to comprehend? If it seems to you like I'm explaining this to you like you're a child, well then you're at least displaying some sentient thought. You have a one-sided view of geopolitics that comes straight from the pages of mainstream media, without any research of your own, it appears. Your utter cluelessness about geopolitics in general can be abstracted as a dumb opinion in any open forum. As for the rest of your boneheaded comment, I'll treat it with the contempt it deserves!

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2013-02-02 14:33

Fidel, You just don't seem to have the brains, to understand that in a case like Lockerbie, different opinions, different 'facts' and different interpretations. It is obvious that the perpatrators of this hidious act, will do everything in their power to , not only cover up their crime, but also to confuse!!!! and than when the lovers of conspiracies come along, than the real circus starts!! Remember, JFK, 50 years ago !!! Or , Elvis Presley......!!!!!!! Just between you and me; there are billions of pages on the internet, and you can find ANYTHING there, and you can also proof ANYTHING. But, dont spoil the fun of others..........ssssssstttttttt

      Sigh.. I missed you Fiddle...

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-02-03 08:58

@Anthony Your comment reminds me of the standard lazy attempt to discredit someone's point of view by implying they are positing the existence of a conspiracy when they have done no such thing. The staple diet of poorly constructed arguments. Actually on reflection, I am a conspiracy theorist, in that I look at the available data on an issue, then look at the official line on that issue, then decide whether there is a conspiracy by the powers that be to pull the wool over the eyes of the public.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2013-02-03 20:48

. Actually on reflection, you can't be a conspiracy theorist, You are far too brain washed for that !!!!

  • michael.tetley.35 - 2013-02-02 10:16

@ the editorial staff. Isn't it about time that the rules were changed, compelling people to post under their own names? Right now, because of the anonymity afforded by a nom de plume, trolls say and post things they would never dare to say face to face, or if people knew who they were. It might then raise the level of debate above the level of playground name calling, hair puling and personal insults that seem to currently prevail.

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-02-02 13:27

And as it happens, trolling actually means to post off-topic and abusive nonsense. It does not mean being on-topic and having a different opinion. Michael tetley, pot, kettle Michael. If the shoe fits.... Fools should not be suffered in silence. Do try and respond with at least some pretensions to intellectual honesty!

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2013-02-02 15:56

Fidel, Who cares what 'trolling' means !! Stop your childish behavior, putting everybody in his/her place!!! If you got some inferiority complex, go and see a skrink !!! If you got something to say, do so, but for the rest, go and entertain your friends at the 'bookclub' !!!!

Rude' Must admit, you leftists lunatics, stick together!!! THAT'S the ONLY reason, that after FIFTY YEARS, of 'trolling' , and having achieved NOTHING, you are all still around !!! Keep it up !!!!

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-02-03 08:43

"Has anyone noticed the level of thumbs down these nom de plumes are suffering with lately? " Constantly counting the number of downvotes suggests to me issues of low self-esteem. The really odd part about this is that the low self-esteem leads to behaviors that simply reinforce the low sense of self-worth. It’s like trying to hang out with a group of people who get together and have lively debates about current issues and the ONLY contribution you EVER make is to shout at them and call them all leftist, delusional jerks (and worse) and then wonder why they aren’t keen on having you attend the next get together. Then, spending a ton of time counting the number of times they get together and don’t invite you. And finally, based on the results of your depressing counting exercise, shouting at them from the sidewalk when they leave the debate to go home. The debate at which your commentary was not welcome. This is not about group think... You lot are pathetic!
