Collapsed Ghana mall didn't have permit

2012-11-08 16:42

Accra - A six-storey mall that collapsed in the Ghanaian capital, killing nine people lacked a permit and the disaster was caused by structural failure, an official said on Thursday.

"They didn't have a permit, which means that AMA (Accra Municipal Authority) may not have assigned a building inspector," said Magnus Quarshie, vice president of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, which is probing the collapse.

"From the inspection we have had, we can see it's a structural failure. We can tell the concrete mix was not to the specifications we require."

The new muslim/indian shopping centre buildings in Maputo are probably the next to go down! Cannot bring myself to go inside of them - something is just amiss.
